Seamanship & Nautical Skills
Research on historical events or stories where common civilian personnel / resources are used or deployed during a maritime emergency that contributed to successful rescues. Draw simple parallel of this event / stories to the relevance of how your skills as a Sea Scouts can be useful should you encounter a maritime emergency.
Understand the concepts of tides and current and be able to read a tide and tidal stream table.
Able to fix positions by Bearings & Transits.
Demonstrate competency in understanding ROR (Part B I & II).
Understand the INTERCO Flags and explain how they are used for communication out at sea.
Demonstrate the ability to operate a VHF marine radio, including: selecting appropriate channels, conducting routine communication using standard marine radio procedures, and transmitting a distress call (Mayday) with all required elements on the correct emergency channel (Channel 16).
Able to pipe the Boatswain pipe – ‘General Pipe’, ‘Still’, ‘Carry On’, ‘The Side’.
Log at least 1 hour of sea time as a look out during a sea sortie.
Water Sports Skills
Obtain any TWO different (basic level) sea sports related proficiency badges OR Complete any TWO different (basic level) sea sports certification courses.
Explain how the weather and tides can affect various sea activities and demonstrate how to obtain a local forecast for a sea activity.
Understand monsoon seasons, Sumatra squall, katabatic and anabatic wind, sea and land breeze.
Complete and passed a water related basic lifesaving course.
Marine Environmental Stewardship
Identify any THREE government agencies or organisations involved in the protection and conservation of Singapore’s marine environment. Briefly describe some initiatives taken by them in the works of marine conservation.
Explain the ‘ecosystem services’ in a marine habitat and identify one threat this habitat faces.
Safely organise and facilitate an educational coastal clean-up for a community of people. Event plan must include safety brief, basic risk assessment and intended learning outcomes.
Maritime Career Discovery
Complete ONE of the following:
- Visit the Integrated Simulation Centre and explain how Cadet Officers are trained to be qualified Deck Officers.
- Visit the Port Operations Control Centre and explain the role of a Vessel Traffic Management Operator.
- Attend a Shipboard experience and explain the various roles onboard a RSN Ship.
- Any other maritime industry career visits approved by the Sea Scout Roundtable.
