Complete 2 requirements from Section A and complete all of Section B.
Section A:-
• Forest Conservation
1) State 2 reasons why it is important to conserve our forests in Singapore.
2) Visit a forest in Singapore and write about your experience.
3) Find some examples in the local or international news showing how man has damaged nature and other examples showing how man has improved nature.
• Protection of Wetlands
1) What are the names of some of the wetlands we have in Singapore?
2) Visit a wetland in Singapore and write about your experience.
3) State 2 reasons why we should protect our wetlands.
• Wildlife Conservation
1) Name 1 Singapore animal that has gone extinct. What do you think caused the extinction
2) Name 2 animals in Singapore that are endangered. What does it mean when we say an animal is endangered?
3) Make a display to inform others about an animal, bird, plant, fish, etc. which is in danger of extinction. Share with them steps we can take to ensure that the plants and animals we have right now in Singapore will still be around for future generations.
• Reducing Global Warming
1) What causes holes in the ozone layer/ and thinning of the ozone?
2) Why is this a problem?
3) State 2 things that you and your family can do to slow down global warming.
• Conservation of Resources
1) Do a waste check for your family at the end of each day for a week. Sort the materials in your waste bin/s and record your findings. (eg. plastic, glass, cans, paper etc.) Share these findings and results with your family members. Propose ideas on how you can practice the 5R's at home: ie refuse, re-use, repurpose, recycle.
2) Find out how much electricity your family uses monthly by referring to your most recent household utility bill. Compare it to the national average. Discuss these findings with your family.
3) State 2 ways that families can save each of the following:
(i) food
(ii) water
(iii) electricity
Section B:-
1) Plan and carry out a small project with your family/ friends/ fellow Cubs - to make a difference in 1 of the above areas. Note, this project must be carried out in a group and not on your own. Examples may include:
• starting a recycling scheme: e.g. bottles, cans, waste paper, plastic, etc
• a power-saving project you undertake - where you encourage others to use power-efficient home appliances or vehicles
• to write to your MP, or other decision makers to consider the environmental impacts of e.g. a new building project/ road/ mrt line etc
• arrange for your family, or Cubs in your unit to each plant a tree or grow and maintain a vegetable garden
• do a beach- or mangrove clean-up
• do an anti-litter campaign for your school or residential area
• any other suitable activity agreed with your Akela.
2) Journal each stage of your project from start to finish. Include photographs to help you tell your story.
{Note: Where Cubs are carrying out a project anywhere near water, eg cleaning up the mangroves or a coastal area, Cub Scout Leaders must ensure adequate arrangements have been made for the safety of the Cub Scouts and that the activity is properly supervised.}
