Seamanship & Nautical Skills
Construct a model boat using any recycled material and use it to describe the SIX degrees of freedom and explain the principles on why a boat can float.
Able to demonstrate FIVE basic seamanship ropeworks and explain the basic concepts of line handling safety.
Able to identify and explain aids to navigation / markers at sea and locate all the lighthouses that are managed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
Know TEN additional general nautical terms.
Able to explain what is ROR / COLREGs and how does it help with safe navigation at sea (ROR Part A).
Know how to send a distress signal out at sea (ROR Annex IV).
Understand and able to explain the various roles and responsibilities onboard a vessel during a sea sortie.
Log at least 1 hour of sea time as a deck hand OJT during a sea sortie.
Attain the Boat Maintenance Badge.
Attain the Ship Spotter Badge.
Water Sports Skills
Understand and explain to your Skipper at least THREE hazards (dangers) during participation in a sea / water-based activity and its potential consequences. Discuss at least THREE precautions you will take to mitigate these risks with your Skipper.
Able to step or jump into deep water (full submersion) and return to surface, body turn / roll around and return to safety, float / thread water for 1 min and swim continuously for 50m without flotation aid and exit the water.
Able to effectively throw a life buoy AND a throw bag OR similar weighted rope to a victim.
Attempt a try out session of any TWO different non-motorised sea sport crafts.
Marine Environmental Stewardship
Attend a zero waste or marine conservation themed Learning Journey and write a reflection of your experience.
Attain the Marine Conservation Badge.
Maritime Career Discovery
Participate in a Learning Journey to the RSN Museum.
Write a reflection with at least THREE photos based on your experience of your learning journey. It should reflect your understanding of the RSN’s history and the roles they play in the security of our Sea Lines of Communication.
Explore TWO other government agencies that support the safety and security of our seas and briefly explain their roles to your Crew / Patrol.
