Artist Inspired Images

Artist Statement:

To create the first image I took a photo of my friend Julia holding an old fashioned polaroid camera. This photo was taken at Pineland farm in a garden. I edited the image by enhancing the lighting. I chose to create this specific image because I really liked the bright colors created by all the trees and flowers around her and the way the sun was illuminating her hair and dress. This work is composed using formal balance with Julia in the center of the image. To create the second image I create a milk bath and took photos of my friend Julia wearing lots of makeup. The setting of this image is a bathtub at Julia’s house. I edited the image by enhancing the color in the image and cropping it down. I chose to create this specific image because I wanted to work around social issues just like Zankoul does with many of her photographs. This work is composed using formal balance as well.

My first image evolved because I changed the placement of the photograph so that I could have the sunlight in the background illuminating her dress and hair. My second image evolved because I had to experiment using the makeup and food coloring in order to achieve the dripping effect that I was looking for. As I continued to experiment with the materials at the photoshoot I decided to use food coloring in the milk bath to add more detail and color.

The meaning behind the first image is to see the beauty in everything, and to take the time to appreciate it. This image relates to my life because I like using the environment and nature as a major part of my drawing and photography. Something that bothers me about the first image is that the image isn’t focuses completely. The meaning behind the second image is that many women try to cover themselves completely over with makeup to hide their “imperfections”, but nobody is perfect. The water is acting as a cleansing to unveil the real you. This image relates to my life because I have always loved to be outside in nature and experiencing all it has to offer. Something that bothers me about the second image is that it resembles more of a crime scene than I expected and wanted it to look.
