Emily Margaret Kim is a young passionate aspiring film composer from NYC. Growing up as a classically trained pianist and oboist, Emily has always had a love and a gifted ear for music. At 5 years old, Emily found herself curiously playing melodies she picked up from her surroundings by ear at the piano. She began studying piano more formally at the age of 6, and took it upon herself to later learn guitar at age 10, and oboe at age 14. Emily studied piano and oboe at the prestigious Mannes School of Music (Pre-College Division) in NYC, and spent summers playing music at the Interlochen Arts Camp and the Luzerne Music Center.

Emily has always had a love for both music and film and their transformative storytelling powers. She finds joy in collaborating with and developing meaningful connections with filmmakers who share a passion for telling stories through art forms. Emily has worked on scores for short films written, directed, and edited by peers at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) through Brown Motion Pictures. She has also recently worked and collaborated with film students from USC, NYU, and Northwestern University.

Emily completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University this past spring, with a dual bachelor’s degree in Music and American Studies. Last year, during the ’22-’23 Academic Year, she received Brown’s Muriel Hassenfeld Mann Premium in Music, which annually recognizes a female student who excels in music. She is looking forward to attending NYU Steinhardt’s Screen Scoring Program for her Master’s starting in the fall.
