ELAR (Ms. Dagger)
This week, we will wrap up Module 7 by reading The Mighty Mars Rovers. Students will recognize literary elements in narrative nonfiction and cause-and-effect text structure that help describe the Mars rovers' missions. We will end the week with the Module 7 Assessment.
In grammar, we will focus on revising and editing passages.
In writing, we will continue perfecting our ECR, as well as work on our Open House writing project.
Remember to set a time to read each night at home. Reading at home increases comprehension skills, as well as vocabulary.
Ask your child to identify cause and effect events in the story they are reading.
What events occured and why did it happen?
Ask your child to identify the sequence of events in a story they have read recently?
Can your child identify a problem and solution in a recent book or movie?
Math (Ms. Lee)
The students are working on Unit 9 called Geometry and Measurement. The students will learn how to classify and identify 2 dimensional shapes. They specifically learn how to classify quadrilaterals and triangles. The students will then move into reveiw perimeter and area. In fifth grade, the students also learn how to find volume of a square and rectangle. We finish this unit by learning how to convert measurments using the customary and metric systems.
Homework
The students will need to complete 30 minutes in i-Ready this week along with 3 fluencies.
Your children did amazing on our Math Interim!! I am very proud of all of them. Each child has their own interim plan to work on skills for mastery. They have time in class to work on some of the interim plan but will need at times to work on it at home.

Science/SS (Ms. Whelan)
It's hard to believe we are starting our last week in February! This year is flying by.
In science this week, we will be learning about how energy can transfer from one object to another, as well as change into a different form. For example, burning wood transfers chemical energy into light and thermal energy. Ask your child what types of energy they see being used at home!
In social studies, our next unit test, over the Civil War and Reconstruction, will be taken on Friday. We will spend the week reviewing the causes of the war, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments that came about after the war ended, and what American looked like during the Reconstruction period. We will also continue our research of Abraham Lincoln and finish up our Open House projects. It is going to be a busy week full of learning!
