Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing.(loop letters and up/down letters). During the next two weeks they will learn the rest of the up/down letters. This week they will learn how to write the lowercase case letters "r", "s", and "t". Later in the week they will write words that have a combination of all the letters they have learned up to this point. . Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.
Loop letters to review: l, e, h, b, f, k
Up/Down letters to review: i, j, p,

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
What strategies they use when they come to a word they don't know in their reading?
This week we continue our study of biographies learning about people who have made a difference in our world. In reading we will discuss chronological order, timelines, and practice our inferencing skills.
In writing we will begin an imaginary writing piece taking it through the entire writing process. We will also continue our practice of commas in a series.

Math
Ask your child ...
Have a ruler or tape measure at home? Practice estimating and measuring those objects using cm and inches. Why is the cm number greater than inches?
Our 2nd graders This past week, we learned how to find the area of a rectangle and a square. We used colored tiles to compose rectangles and squares given different attributes. For example, "Create a rectangle with 4 rows and 2 columns. What is the area? "
We will be measuring every day objects around our classroom using cm cubes and inch tiles. We will discover the meaning of an "inverse operation" and how cm and inches are similar and different. Students will also practice how to make a good estimation for the length of an object using what we know about inch tiles and cm cubes.
Please encourage your 2nd grader to check their minutes on I-Ready. We aim for 10 minutes daily in both math and reading. So, by the end of the day, this is the break down:
Monday: 10 minutes
Tuesday: 20 minutes
Wednesday: 30minutes
Thursday: 40 minutes
Friday: 50 minutes.
Science
Ask your child ...
How are we able to see the moon in the sky?
Last week, our scientists studied the moon, sun and how to best see objects in the sky.
We compared using our eyes, binoculars and telescopes when looking at the moon and stars.
I hope that students came home and shared their obserations and showed you the amazing pictures from telescopes that are oribiting our planet right now!
Social Studies
Ask your child...
What are some modifications that you see in our community today? Do they have any positive or negative consequences?
This week our students will be reading and exploring how people modify the environment to meet their needs and the consequences of those modifications.
We will also identify ways that people can conserve and replenish our resources.

Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
