Winter Break is Near!
It is hard to believe that in 3.5 days, your children will have completed their first semester of 2nd grade! While you are here this week for different activities, please check the Lost and Found next to the cafeteria. There are lots of nice jackets, hats, water bottles, etc. that are just waiting for you to claim them. Items not taken home by Friday will be donated to GRACE.
We want to thank you for making this semester one of the best semesters ever! Your children are dear to us, and we want to thank you for sharing them with us every day! We hope you all have a nice, exciting, and restful holiday season with your families.
Be safe!

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
to tell you about the books in their book boxes this week.
If you haven't heard yet, elves made an appearance in our 2nd grade classrooms this week (Jack, Snickerdoodle, and Snowie). It's the first thing students look for when they arrive in the morning, and it has resulted in many letters to Santa.
Next week will focus primarily on the holidays- favorite read alouds, poetry, and sharing of family traditions.
Math
Ask your child ...
What do you like most about graphing? (coming up with a topic, surveying your friends, or making the graph?) Why?
This week our 2nd graders looked at their growth from their MOY Math Test. They did such a wonderful job! The results will be coming home in January. You will be so proud of them! We have been working on a graphing project and will finish it up next week.
Over the break please review counting coins with them. Some are doing well, and some are still needing some extra practice counting a mixture of coins up to $1.00. Also, they could still use some practice regrouping with addition and subtraction. If you need something for them to do during the break, they can work on their I-Ready Fluency Flight, too. However, this is NOT mandatory at all.
Science
Ask your child...
What is the difference between man made and natural resources?
What are two ways we can help conserve our resources?
This week scientists will be discovering the differences between resources that are manmade and natural resources. We will be discussing the uses of these resources and how natural resources are used to make every day objects around us.
We will also discuss different ways that we can help conserve our resources and not be as wasteful in order to better take care of our Earth.
Social Studies
Has your family been to a famous memorial or monument? If so, see what your child remembers.
Memorials and Monuments are special landmarks. They remind us of important places, people, and events. This week students will learn about The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and The Alamo in San Antonio, TX, to name a few.
Students love to talk about their family travels. So if they've been somewhere that fits with our study of American Memorials and Monuments, encourage them to share their experience with the class. It's also a great time to pull out those maps and teach a little geography.
No Spelling Words this Week.
Instead we are testing students on 2nd grade High Frequency Words, which we've been embedding in their weekly lists. These words came home at the beginning of the Nine Weeks for them to practice.
OC Taylor Tidbits.....
Student Absences: Please email your homeroom teacher AND copy Sierra Salter, sierra.salter@gcisd.net and Paola Cervantes, paola.cervantes@gcisd.net anytime your child will be absent for any reason.
Arrival: K-2 students go to the gym. 3-5 students go to the cafeteria. Students report directly to the classroom starting at 7:30. The tardy bell is at 7:35 a.m..
Picking up or Any Ride Changes: Please email Sierra Salter, sierra.salter@gcisd.net and PaolaCervantes, paola.cervantes@gcisd.net, prior to 2:00, if your child is going home a different way than normal.
At 2:30, the office lets each teacher know of these changes, so that we can let students know. If your child is not on our email list from the office about a ride change, we cannot let them go home differently. Your child's safety is our top priority.
Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
