Reminders
Dot Day
Please join us in celebrating International Dot Day on Monday, September 15th by wearing dots to school! International Dot Day is named for the classic Peter H. Reynolds storybook, "The Dot." The book shares the story of a girl who begins a journey of self-discovery after a caring teacher challenges her to “make her mark.” International Dot Day is about creativity and inspiration. We can't wait to see all of our First Graders wearing dots on Monday to celebrate creativity!
Weekly Library Schedule
Students will check out a new book from the library weekly as long as they return their old books. Please help your child remember to put library books back in his/her backpack after reading them at home. This will help ensure that your child gets to check out a new book at the library every time!

Ms. Hilcher - Tuesday
Mrs. Duncan - Wednesday
Ms. Welch - Friday
What is Subitizing?
Subitizing is the ability to rapidly and automatically recognize a set of objects, without counting. When someone holds up 4 fingers, you don’t have to count them. You just know that there are 4. When you see 6 dots on a die, you know it’s 6.
There are two kinds of subitizing: perceptual and conceptual. Perceptual subitizing involves small sets. It precedes conceptual subitizing. Conceptual subitizing involves larger numbers and breaking them into smaller groups. For instance, when looking at 8 dots, you might see 4 and 4.
This skill is closely tied to number sense. Subitizing larger numbers helps students develop flexibility with numbers. This flexibility helps them see that numbers are composed different ways. For instance, 10 can be 4 and 6 or 3 and 7. This flexibility helps students become more efficient with mental math. Strong subitizing skills set students up for future success in math.
Volunteers
We will need volunteers this year for field trips and other opportunities! In order to be a volunteer, you must have attended the Volunteer Orientation and completed the criminal background check. All volunteers are required to reapply EACH YEAR.

Mystery Readers
We are so excited to have Mystery Readers join us on select Fridays this school year! Please see the Sign Up Genius link here. Please select only one slot, so that other parents have an opportunity to read. You will need to provide your own book, and we kindly ask that you email your child's teacher one week prior to your date for approval on your book. Please let your child's teacher know if you have any questions.
Daily Snack
Please remember to send in a healthy snack with your child each day. Your child’s snack must be NUT-FREE. Please pack the snack separate from their lunch. That will help me know that your child is eating their snack and not part of their lunch.
Student Absences
Please email your homeroom teacher and copy Sierra Salter, sierra.salter@gcisd.net any time your Tiger will be absent.
Ride changes
If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please email your child's teacher, Ms. Paola, and Ms. Sierra by at least 2:00 pm.
iPad and Charger
Please be sure your child brings his/her 100% charged iPad AND charger to school every day. If your child is new to OCT, we are working on getting your child a device as soon as possible.
