Thank you for helping me jump start my birthday weekend in such a fun and exciting way! The teamwork all of you showed so that our 2nd grade team could eat together on my little "holiday" (that is what I call birthdays 😊) meant so much to the three of us. The yummy latte in the morning, the INCREDIBLE gift mid morning, the delicious lunch, and the amazing dessert in the afternoon just made my day EVERY time you all appeared. The best part was spending time with all the 2nd graders and getting hugs and "happy birthday" cards throughout the day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It truly made this first birthday without Brian extra special. There really are not enough words for me to express it.Â
With love,
Mrs. Lee :)Â

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
to tell you the difference between external and internal character traits and identify them in the stories they are reading at home.
This week's ELAR lessons will focus on external and internal character traits, and informational text features. We will learn about runner Wilma Rudolph, women's rights advocate Abigail Adams, and civil rights activist W.E.B. DuBois.
In writing, we are working on expanding sentences and writing more every day. Writing takes perseverance for our little ones. Managing ideas, handwriting, spelling, and grammar is a lot and we are proud of those up for the challenge.
Math
Ask your child ...
How are you doing with counting mixed coins up to a dollar? Have them show you.Â
This week our 2nd grade mathematicians began working with money. Thank you for sending your children with their coins. We sorted them, learned about them, skip counted "like" coins, and couted mixed coins throughout the week. Also, we reviewed fractions, 2 digit subtraction and addition, and word problems.Â
Next week we will take our 2nd grade Math TEKS check over fractions, 2 digit addition and subtraction and word problems. We will work with money where they will have a target amount to make and list of some of the coins with 1 or two coins missing. They will have to find what is missing to make the target amount.Â
Please contiue to work on their Math Facts (we call them Fun Facts). You can use a deck of cards, dice, flash cards, or some of their apps on their ipad. Â
Science
Ask your child...
How does wind or water change the Earth's surface?
Last week, our students got to participate and observe how wind and water can change the Earth's surface.Â
We observed how wind can move sand from one place to another to create dunes in a quick change and how over a long time wind blowing sand against rocks can create a very interesting landform called a mushroom rock. Â
We talked about water current and how that impacts how water carries soils and small rocks down mountains as well as the power of water to change the surfaces of beaches daily.Â
Perhaps on a family walk, you all could notice how water has changed the surfaces around creeks or other areas where you live.Â
Social Studies
Ask your child...
to share characteristics of a good citizen.
This week students will learn about citizenship- what is means to be a good citizen, our rights and responsibilities, and the importance of serving one's community. If your family regularly serves the community we would love to hear about it. Perhaps your stories will inspire others.

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller:Â Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford:Â Wednesday (10:00-10:30)

Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.Â
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.Â
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.Â
