Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
to set a personal goal for reading at home.
Coming up this week daily reading and writing as usual, read alouds, and word analysis. Students will also practice summarizing and become better acquainted with nonfiction text features.
Here is the acronym your children will learn to help them summarize.
Somebody- Who is the main character?
Wanted- What did the character want?
But- What was the problem?
So- How did the character try to solve the problem?
Then- What was the resolution to the story?
These are great questions to ask your child while reading with them at home too.
Math
Ask your child ...
Why do we circle the bottom number in the ones place in a 2 digit subtraction problem?
(hint: More on the floor, go next door. More on the top, no need to stop)
This week our 2nd graders took theri Math TEKS check over fractions, 2 digit addition & subtraction, & word problems. Also, they worked a lot with money and how to find missing amounts when given a Target Amount.
Next week we will continue to review those concepts above, but, we will begin our graphing unit. It is so much fun to graph with 2nd graders! They will be learning to survey people about certain topics, and then create a pictograph or a bar graph that represents their data. F.U.N!!!!!
Please contiue to work on their Math Facts (we call them Fun Facts). You can use a deck of cards, dice, flash cards, or some of their apps on their ipad. Math Duel, Sushi Monster, & Pet Bingo are still their favorites. Flash Domino is on their Stemscopes games, and it is a math fact game, too. Enjoy! Make it fun!
Science
Ask your child...
What is the difference between man made and natural resources?
What are two ways we can help conserve our resources?
This week scientists will be discovering the differences between resources that are manmade and natural resources. We will be discussing the uses of these resources and how natural resources are used to make every day objects around us.
We will also discuss different ways that we can help conserve our resources and not be as wasteful in order to better take care of our Earth.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
what symbols come to mind when they think of the United States.
This week students will learn that patriotic symbols and customs reflect American values, such as, freedom, innovation, creativity and individuality. The bald eagle, rose, Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, and Uncle Sam are just a few of the symbols your child will learn.

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
