Valentine's Day Cards & Boxes
Dear Parents,
Please carefully read the following details concerning Valentine’s Day. A hardcopy of this note was sent home in your child's Tiger Folder on Friday, January 31.
Valentines: We will be exchanging valentines at school on Friday, February 13th during our class party. Your child needs to bring a valentine for each student in their class. Please have your child address each valentine with the names of their classmates. Make sure your child signs his/her name to each card. Students may bring their valentines and valentine box to school on Thursday (the 12th) or Friday (the 13th).
Valentine Boxes: We are asking for each child to bring a decorated box to school the week the week on either Thursday ( the 12th) or on Friday (the 13th). Please make sure that a large slot/hole is cut in the box since some of the valentines may have candy attached to them.
Remember to make sure your child’s name is written clearly on their box so that other children can easily identify who it belongs to when they are delivering valentines. This is a fun project for your child to do at home!

Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing. By the end of this coming week, they will have learned the lower-case letters : i, j, p, l, e, h, b, f, and k. We will connect those letters to create words soon. Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
to share some of their favorite books from 2nd grade.
Last week we started our "Weather Wise" unit focusing on vocabulary, point of view, and text organization. This week we will shift to author's purpose, practice making connections to self-texts-world, and learn to "evaluate" what we read, that is, determine the important parts and how they all work together.
In writing we are continuing to write and evaluate poetry, which includes the use of figurative language.
Math
Ask your child ...
What is the difference between a square pyramid and a rectangular prism?
Your 2nd graders learned how to classify and sort 3D shapes & worked on composing and decomposing 2D shapes. We talked about the attributes, which are vertices, edges, and faces/bases for 3D shapes and sides and vertices for 2D shapes. Also, we reviewed how to count a group of mixed coins. .
Next week, we will continue to review counting mixed coins and how to write the amount correctly. Also, we will continue to classify and sort 3D shapes and solve riddles by their attributes. They will need to apply what they have learned to solve the riddles.
Please continue to work on their subtraction facts and 2 digit subtraction. .The Subtraction App is a great way for your child to practice regrouping two digit numbers.
Science
Ask your child ...
How can we record and measure weather data?
Last Week, our scientists are started our weather unit with discussions about weather tools, how to collect data about the weather and how severe weather affects us.
Coming up in the next few weeks, our scientists will explore the sun, moon and other objects in the sky. We will talk about tools that we use, and why the objects in the sky appear the way that they do.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
if they can identify the country, state, and city they live in. Also, does your child know his/her address?
We will be reviewing all of that information next week, as well as, leanring the continents and oceans of the world.

Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
