We look forward to seeing all of the parents at our Valentine's Day Parties!
If you will be coming, please plan to come up to school at some point before Friday to print your nametags in the front vestibule! It will save you the wait and long lines.
Valentine's Day Cards & Boxes
Dear Parents,
Please carefully read the following details concerning Valentine’s Day. A hardcopy of this note was sent home in your child's Tiger Folder on Friday, January 31.
Valentines: We will be exchanging valentines at school on Friday, February 13th during our class party. Your child needs to bring a valentine for each student in their class. Please have your child address each valentine with the names of their classmates. Make sure your child signs his/her name to each card. Students may bring their valentines and valentine box to school on Thursday (the 12th) or Friday (the 13th).
Valentine Boxes: We are asking for each child to bring a decorated box to school the week the week on either Thursday ( the 12th) or on Friday (the 13th). Please make sure that a large slot/hole is cut in the box since some of the valentines may have candy attached to them.
Remember to make sure your child’s name is written clearly on their box so that other children can easily identify who it belongs to when they are delivering valentines. This is a fun project for your child to do at home!
For Science on TUESDAY, February 10th, we are in need of binoculars for our 2nd graders to share and use to look at clouds and other objects around us.
If you have any pairs that you are willing to let us use, please send them (Labeled) on Monday to your child's homeroom teachers. I promise we will take good care of them.
If you are interested in having your child tested for telescoping, the link below will tell you all about the process, the dates of testing, deadline for registering, and more.
Math Telescoping Testing Information
. Additionali information is also available on the mathematics telescoping website.
Details will be coming home in the next few weeks about cost, times, what to bring and more.
If you would like to be a chaperone, please return the orange form that went home. If you cannot find the form, please reach out to your homeroom teacher and tell them you are interested in chaperoning with the group. Remember this field trip is for our 2nd graders only. No siblings or younger children can attend.
All chaperones need to have a Volunteer Background Check with the district. Please click here to access the link to fill out the form. Thank you! We look forward to a GREAT trip.

Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing.(loop letters and up/down letters). During the next two weeks they will learn the rest of the up/down letters. This week they will learn how to write the lowercase case letters "r", "s", and "t". Later in the week they will write words that have a combination of all the letters they have learned up to this point. . Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.
Loop letters to review: l, e, h, b, f, k
Up/Down letters to review: i, j, p,

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
what stratagies they use when they come to a word they don't know in their reading.
This week we are starting a new unit on biographies. Students will learn that biographies are written in 3rd person and chronological order. We will review central idea as well, as we read the books Miss Moore Thought Otherwise and I Am Helen Keller together.
In writing we will talk about the parts of a letter, commas in date and places and irregular verbs.

Math
Ask your child ...
When we are subtracting a 2 digit number, how do you know to go next door to borrow a ten?
Our 2nd graders are getting REALLY good at describing the attributes of the 2D polygons and the 3D solids. We reviewed counting money and subtraction, as well. Double Digit subtraction is one area that you could help out at home. See how your child does with regrouping and without regrouping.
Next week are learning how to find the area of a rectangle and a square. We will be using colored tiles to compose rectangles and squares given different attributes. For example, "Create a rectangle with 4 rows and 2 columns."
Please encourage your 2nd grader to check their minutes on I-Ready. We aim for 10 minutes daily in both math and reading. So, by the end of the day, this is the break down:
Monday: 10 minutes
Tuesday: 20 minutes
Wednesday: 30minutes
Thursday: 40 minutes
Friday: 50 minutes.
Science
Ask your child ...
How are we able to see the moon in the sky?
This week, our scientists will be studying the moon, sun and how to best see objects in the sky.
We will be comparing using our eyes, binoculars and telescopes when looking at the moon and stars.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
if they can identify the country, state, and city they live in. Also, does your child know his/her address?
We will be reviewing all of that information next week, as well as, the continents and oceans of the world.

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
