ELAR (Ms. Dagger)
This week, we will take our iReady BOY diagnostic on Tuesday-Thursday during reading class. Please ensure your student gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast, so they can show their best work on this assessment.
Please click here to read our weekly reading newsletter.
Remember to set a time to read each night at home. Reading at home increases comprehension skills, as well as vocabulary. After reading, ask your child, why do you think the author wrote this book?
Math (Ms. Lee)
Hello Parents! The students are learning place value and decimals this week. They will learn how to write decimals in expanded notation through the thousandths, compare/order and round decimals, and identify place and value of digits. The students will take their first math test over Unit 1 and Unit 2 which is over Financial Literacy and Place Value and Decimals on Wednesday, September 3
Homework
The students will begin the year by completing 45 minutes and 4 fact fluency sessions in one week in their i-Ready app found in classlink. If we have a four day week, the students will only need to complete 30 minutes and 3 fact fluency sessions in i-Ready. This requirement will start the first week in September which is a four day week. Please note that for each fact fluency session, the students can only do one per day.
As the year progresses, I will be assigning more review in their Canvas and Go Math apps. I will communicate those assignments here when they begin. If you have any questions, please reach out to me anne.hurstlee@gcisd.net.
Science/SS (Ms. Whelan)
This week in science students will be learning about matter and magnetism. They will be learning that not all metals are magnetic and how magnets attract, by practicing related vocabulary and participating in hands-on learning.
In SS, students will learn how and why people settled in the U.S., including what influenced the location and growth of major U.S. cities.
5th Grade Club Applications
IMPORTANT: Before any child can participate in any clubs, we need you to fill out the forms for permission in skyward.
The students will have the opportunity to apply for our fifth grade clubs this year. We will be passing the applications out for the clubs on Monday, August 25. Your child can choose from Tiger Time News, Tiger Mascot, Safety Patrol, Yearbook, and Student Council. They can choose up to three of these to participate in this year. We would love for all students to at least participate in one. More information about when and who runs each club is in the curriculum night presentation that you can find linked below.
Also, the students can be a part of Friends of the Library, Run Club, and Choir; but these do not count towards the total three clubs. These can be done in addition to the three other clubs they choose to be a part of in fifth grade.
Curriculum Night Presentation
Thank you to those of you who attended curriculum night. If you were unable to make it to curriculum night. Here is the link to the presentation.
5th Grade PTA Information
We are continuing to use the dismissal procedure called SafeID. This system is more streamlined and much safer for dismissal times. If your child's form of transportation home changes, PLEASE let the front office know by calling or emailing sierra.salter@gcisd.net as quickly as possible and before 2:00.
Chromebooks
Please have your child charge their chromebook each evening and bring it to school along with the charger and headphones.
If a question or concern arises, please contact one of the 5th-grade teachers as your first point of contact. We are here to help answer questions, alleviate concerns, and support you and your child.
