Curriculum
🧮 Math - This week the students will continue practicing addition and subtraction of decimals, but with multi-step word problems. They will solve a variety of word problems including problems where they will need to calculate the profit (income - expenses).
Unit 3 TEKS Check will be THIS Friday, November 7th. The test will be over decimal place value, relationships, comparing, ordering, addition, and subtraction. It will also cover financial literacy - profit, fixed expenses, variable expenses, and financial institutions.
🧪 Science - In Science this week, the students will focus on our study of acquired and inherited traits of plants. Students will focus on answering the essential question..."Why are organisms sometimes alike and different from their parents?"
📚 Reading: Module 4: Heroic Feats —This week, our 4th graders are soaring to new heights as we explore the skills of text features, author’s purpose, text structure, and media. Our new unit, “What It Takes to Be a HERO,” kicks off with a high-flying guest — a retired Special Forces Paratrooper who knows all about courage, grit, and teamwork! Students will connect his story to our HMH text on smokejumpers — those brave firefighters who parachute into danger to protect others. Throughout the week, students will “gear up,” “dig in,” and “put out” any confusion as they work through each reading challenge. By the end, they’ll have earned their wings (and maybe a few bragging rights) as Certified Smokejumpers of Learning! We’re fired up for a week full of heroic effort, sky-high thinking, and smokin’ good reading!
✏️ Writing: Students are reading Cinderella Adaptations with a group to determine the plot elements and will select one scene to create a SKIT to showcase their understanding of drama elements. Parents, thanks for taking the time to read our 4th Grade Newsletter — we love staying connected with you! If your child tells us the secret kindness quote — “Kindness is a superpower” — on Monday before the bell, they’ll earn a house point and 2 tickets 🐾
🌏 Social Studies - This week we will be finalizing Unit 3 discussing The Mexican War of Independence and the Constitution of 1824. Students will also be finishing up their mission project (DUE Wednesday 11/5). Also, this week there will be 2 days of review (Wednesday & Thursday) before our Unit 3 TEST on Friday 11/7.

NEXT CLUB meeting: MONDAY--November 17 , 2025 3:00-3:45
Reading Module TIPS
Have yourchild keep a growing list of the Critical Vocabulary words. Quiz each other on their meanings.
Reading Check in:
Anything that your child does not finish in class will be homework. It will be marked as "Math HW" in their orange GREAT Tiger Folder. We would also like for your child to work on their multiplication and/or division facts for 10 minutes each night.
We want the students to read for at least 20 minutes or more every night. This is the only reading homework we require!
BOOK CLUBS
TBD
Lunch for fourth grade is from 12:20-12:50. Don’t forget to set up a lunch account for your child in the cafeteria. We will use our "Forget Me Not" system again this year. If a student forgets his/ her lunch, parents may bring it to school before lunchtime. Please leave it on the shelf in the lobby (labeled with the student's name). Teachers will remind students to check the shelf before lunch.
Please have your child bring a pair of headphones with them daily. Students use headphones frequently to complete various activities and assessments.
We invite your child to bring a healthy snack to school each day. The snack needs to be something that is not messy and does not require silverware. We are going to be eating and working at the same time. Any snack that contains candy is not considered healthy. A few suggestions are: goldfish, cheerios, pretzels, grapes, raisins, carrots, etc. Your child’s snack must also be NUT-FREE.
Student Absences
If your student is absent for any reason, please email the following people:
your child's teacher
copy: paola.cervantes@gcisd.net and elissa.faught@gcisd.net
Arrival
Students report to the cafeteria starting at 7:25. Then they will be released from the cafeteria to their classrooms at 7:30 a.m. The tardy bell is at 7:35 a.m.
Ride Changes
If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please notify the office via email by at least 2:00 p.m. Teachers and our front office staff do not always have access to email or are busy teaching or helping others. A phone call is required. Sometimes we have only one person in the front office, so we want to provide ample time to be able to meet your needs. When making ride changes, picking up students for appointments and absences, please email both Sierra Salter (sierra.salter@gcisd.net) and Paola Cervantes (paola.cervantes@gcisd.net) in case one of us is out of the office.
Pick up Reminder
Students should be promptly picked up after school at 3:05. We appreciate your efforts to be on time to pick up your child. Finally, when dropping off or picking up your child, please pull your car all the way down to the end of the line. Duty personnel will send your child down to your car. This keeps the traffic flowing. Don’t forget your School Safe ID Number. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.
Communication
Please feel free to contact your homeroom teacher if you have any concerns or questions. We are happy to meet in person, call or email. We want to help immediately with any issues that arise.
As needs arise in our classrooms, we will put them here. We really appreciate your support for us and our students!
