Curriculum
🧮 Math - This week, the students will continue learning how to find equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing by 1 whole (for example, 2/2 or 3/3). They will also relate fractions to decimals using a number line. For example, if 4 2/10 is on a number line, they can relate this fraction to also mean 4.2, read as four and two tenths.
🏡Weekly Homework: Spiral Review Week 11 - Due Friday, January 23th. (available on Friday, January 16th)
🧪 Science - This week, students will learn about the continuous movement of the water cycle. They will be able to explain the role of the Sun as a major source of energy in the water cycle. Students will create a model water cycle as a group, read about the stages of the water cycle, and participate in a variety of other activities to extend their learning.
📚 Reading - This week, Students will read a literary nonfiction text to practice inferencing through literary techniques. We'll ask students to consider the scientific words that relate the topic as we explore the Grand Canyon. In addition, students will be preparing for our STAAR Interim on Thursday 1/22. We'll walk through the tools, expecations, and reminders on Wednesday to give them
✏️ Writing - Students are working on written response tasks to apply Central Idea and Text evidence to support their reasoning when answering prompts.Â
Grammar Spotlight: Nouns vs. Adjectives
This past weeks homework, students practiced identifying nouns and adjectives in sentences. One tricky example we discussed was the phrase “thousands of craters.” While thousands may look like an adjective, it is actually a noun because it names a quantity. The word of introduces a prepositional phrase (of craters) that tells what kind of thousands. A helpful way to check at home is to see if the word can stand alone as a thing: “The thousands are visible.” That works! In contrast, adjectives describe nouns directly, like many craters. Asking your child to explain the difference is a great way to reinforce this skill.
🌏 Social Studies - In Social Studies, students will explore how Texas transitioned from an independent republic to a U.S. state and examine the impact of annexation on the survival of the Republic of Texas. Students will participate in a debate analyzing the pros and cons of annexation, remaining an independent nation, and Manifest Destiny, while studying the roles of key figures such as J. Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas, and President James K. Polk.

Lunch for fourth grade is from 12:20-12:50. Don’t forget to set up a lunch account for your child in the cafeteria. We will use our "Forget Me Not" system again this year. If a student forgets his/ her lunch, parents may bring it to school before lunchtime. Please leave it on the shelf in the lobby (labeled with the student's name). Teachers will remind students to check the shelf before lunch.
Please have your child bring a pair of headphones with them daily. Students use headphones frequently to complete various activities and assessments.Â
We invite your child to bring a healthy snack to school each day. The snack needs to be something that is not messy and does not require silverware. We are going to be eating and working at the same time. Any snack that contains candy is not considered healthy. A few suggestions are: goldfish, cheerios, pretzels, grapes, raisins, carrots, etc. Your child’s snack must also be NUT-FREE.
Student Absences
If your student is absent for any reason, please email the following people:
your child's teacherÂ

Arrival
Students report to the cafeteria starting at 7:25. Then they will be released from the cafeteria to their classrooms at 7:30 a.m. The tardy bell is at 7:35 a.m.
Ride Changes
If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please notify the office via email by at least 2:00 p.m. Teachers and our front office staff do not always have access to email or are busy teaching or helping others. A phone call is required. Sometimes we have only one person in the front office, so we want to provide ample time to be able to meet your needs. When making ride changes, picking up students for appointments and absences, please email both Sierra Salter (sierra.salter@gcisd.net) and Paola Cervantes (paola.cervantes@gcisd.net) in case one of us is out of the office. Â
Pick up Reminder
Students should be promptly picked up after school at 3:05. We appreciate your efforts to be on time to pick up your child. Finally, when dropping off or picking up your child, please pull your car all the way down to the end of the line. Duty personnel will send your child down to your car. This keeps the traffic flowing. Don’t forget your School Safe ID Number. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.
Communication
Please feel free to contact your homeroom teacher if you have any concerns or questions. We are happy to meet in person, call or email. We want to help immediately with any issues that arise.
As needs arise in our classrooms, we will put them here. We really appreciate your support for us and our students!
