If you have a veteran in your family, please send Mrs. Vencil a picture of him or her. She puts together a beautiful slideshow of all of our Tigers' family members that are Veterans.
2nd graders will attend the 8:30-9:00 Veteran's Day program on November 11. The 4th graders will be performing. If you have a Veteran that will be present, please have them attend the 8:30 program so that our 2nd graders can see them. There will be a reception for our Veterans following the program in the Learning Commons (library). However, the students will return to the classroom after the program and resume classroom instruction.

Bring a Stuffie to School!
Our fantastic 2nd graders are the official winners of the October GRACE Supply Drive Challenge! Thanks to their big hearts and generous donations, they brought in the most supplies and have earned a fun day to bring their favorite Stuffie on Wednesday, November 12! Please make sure this stuffie is small enough to fit in their backpack and on their desk so that they can still use their desk to do their classwork. Great job, 2nd grade! You're showing everyone how kindess, empathy, and teamwork make a BIG difference in our community! We are SO proud of you all!
i-Ready's Fluency Flight
Every 2nd grader has Fluency Flight on their i-pad. They work on this program daily until they get a dancing dragon, which should take about 8 minutes. When your child logs into i-Ready, the fluency flight icon is on the bottom right handside of their screen. Have them show you how they are doing on their island! This program helps with math fact fluency. They are able to get 4 dragons per week, which is also our grade level goal. Students can access this program from home, if they are ever absent or did not have a chance to complete at school. Thank you for helping with this and for congratulating them on their awesome progress in this endeavor.
Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
To to give you an example of an idiom.
An idiom is a fun play on words, such as, "don't cry over spilled milk" or "break a leg." Next week we will continue exploring other forms of figurative language (similes, metaphors, and hyperbole). Students will also learn the difference between facts and opinions, and identify both external and internal character traits while reading.
In writing we will practice using synonyms and antonyms to expand our vocabulary, learn how to stretch a basic sentence to provide our reader more information, and study our spelling words (please see list below).
Math
Ask your child ...
Why do we circle the largest number in the ones place when subtracting 2 digit numbers? ( to remind us if theres's more on top, no need to stop. If there's more on the floor, borrow or go next door.)
This week we continued practicing using the CUBES strategy to help them solve word problems. This will become so important once we start getting into more multiple step problems and ones with extra information. We also worked on regrouping with addition and subtraction.
Next week we will begin working with money! They will asked to identify the coins by name and value, to skip count by 5's 10's, and 25's to 100, and how to count a mixture of coins.
Please contiue to work on their Math Facts (we call them Fun Facts). Math Duel, Sushi Monster, and Pet Bingo seem to be their favorites.
Science
Ask your child...
How does wind or water change the Earth's surface?
Our Scientists will be completing two different investigations.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
To tell you what they know about our government. They should be able to explain that there are three levels (local, state, and federal).
Last week students learned more about the leaders of these governments (mayor, governor, and president). Bonus if your child can tell you who currently holds these positions (Lindamood or Tate, Abbott, and Trump).

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
