You child will be taking their Reading Section of the I-Ready Middle of the Year Diagnostic Test beginning on Tuesday, December 9 and Wednesday, December 10th. Please be sure their ipad is charged and that their headphones are working. There have been quite a few headphones not working recently. The diagnostic test takes several days, so please be sure their charged ipads are in their backpacks before they leave from home. We are so excited to see how much they have grown this semester as readers! We believe it is going to be AWESOME!!!
Thank you,

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
what "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" stands for. It's a trick we learned last week for writing a strong summary.
This week we launch a new HMH Module called "Weather Wise." We will read Freddy the Frogcaster and several non-fiction texts. Students will practice identifying Point of View and learn about Cause and Effect. In addition, we will write some winter poetry.
Math
Ask your child ...
Why is the key important for understanding a pictograph?
This week our 2nd graders took their Math I-Ready MOY test. We can't wait to look and share the results with them next week! We also started our graphing unit! It is so much fun to survey our friends and create graphs about the data. In 2nd grade we work with pictographs and bar graphs.
Next week we will begin a fun graph project that they will get to be the authors of from the very beginning. They will choose their topic, survey their friends, make their graph, create questions to ask about their data, and put it all together to showcase it.
Please review counting coins with them. Some are doing well, and some are still needing some extra practice counting a mixture of coins. Also, subtraction and additon facts always need to be kept as a nightly practice either through games, flashcards, or their ipad apps.
Science
Ask your child...
What is the difference between man made and natural resources?
What are two ways we can help conserve our resources?
This week scientists will be discovering the differences between resources that are manmade and natural resources. We will be discussing the uses of these resources and how natural resources are used to make every day objects around us.
We will also discuss different ways that we can help conserve our resources and not be as wasteful in order to better take care of our Earth.
Social Studies
Has your family been to a famous memorial or monument? If so, see what your child remembers.
Memorials and Monuments are special landmarks. They remind us of important places, people, and events. This week students will learn about The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and The Alamo in San Antonio, TX, to name a few.
Students love to talk about their family travels. So if they've been somewhere that fits with our study of American Memorials and Monuments, encourage them to share their experience with the class. It's also a great time to pull out those maps and teach a little geography.

Picking up or Any Ride Changes: Please email Sierra Salter, sierra.salter@gcisd.net and PaolaCervantes, paola.cervantes@gcisd.net, prior to 2:00, if your child is going home a different way than normal.
At 2:30, the office lets each teacher know of these changes, so that we can let students know. If your child is not on our email list from the office about a ride change, we cannot let them go home differently. Your child's safety is our top priority.
Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
