Curriculum
🧮 Math - This week we will continue to practice solving long division problems using standard algorithm. We will then look at strategies to solve one step and multi step word problems involving multiplication and division. 🌟Please continue to have your child work on their multiplication/division facts every night!
★Note: Unit 4: Multiplication & Division TEKS Check is scheduled for the week of October 6-10th.
🧪 Science - In Science this week, we learned the difference between inherited and acquired traits in plants and animals. We observed similarities and differences between cacti and discussed how certain traits help plants survive. Next week, we will begin a new unit on Energy Flow within Ecosystems. The students will investigate and explain how most producers can make their own food using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide through the proces of the cycling matter. Students will conduct an investigation to find out what happens to plants under these circumstances: "Gi
★Note: Unit 1-2 Science TEKS Check is scheduled for the week of October 6-10th.
📚 Reading: TEK Check for Module 2 will take place on Monday, September 30th, and students will begin Module 3 on Tuesday. The focus for this module is exploring how people rise to the occasion. This week, we’ll be “jazzing things up” with the story Rent Party Jazz. Students will “swing” into synthesizing ideas, “strike the right note” as they notice the author’s craft and how language creates voice, and “keep the beat” while exploring plot elements and the importance of the historical setting. Finally, they’ll “improvise” their thinking to determine the theme and the author’s message. We can’t wait to see our readers hit all the right notes as they dive into this new module! September Learning Menu DUE 9/30
✏️ Writing: In writing, students will enjoy a biography book tasting as they explore obstacles, risks, and major accomplishments of selected historical figures. Along the way, they “mustache” the right questions to guide their thinking. With a clear focus in mind, students will begin researching and collecting evidence to support their work. We are excited to see them rise to the occasion as young writers and researchers!
🌏 Social Studies - Students will finish up unit 2 and learning about Native Americans, regions and the changes from past to present. We will conclude our Native American lesson by allowing students to have fun and create their own Native American tribe with their table groups to then present. This project encourages them to reference their learning thus far and show their understanding in an exciting and unique way. We will also provide a review on Wednesday and a KAHOOT review game Thursday to help prepare them for their Module 2 TEKS check on Friday 10/3. We have had so much fun these past few weeks! Be sure to ask your student about their favorite Native American tribe.

Reading Module TIPS
Have yourchild keep a growing list of the Critical Vocabulary words. Quiz each other on their meanings.
Reading Check in:
Ask students to identify the PLOT elements within tv shows and text. Can they describe how each part builds on the next?
Anything that your child does not finish in class will be homework. It will be marked as "Math HW" in their orange GREAT Tiger Folder. We would also like for your child to work on their multiplication and/or division facts for 10 minutes each night.
We want the students to read for at least 20 minutes or more every night. This is the only reading homework we require!
BOOK CLUBS
Help your reader stay on track with their assigned reading by looking at the bookmark dates. Being prepared makes for a great book club discussion!
Meeting 10/1--have your pages read
Lunch for fourth grade is from 12:20-12:50. Don’t forget to set up a lunch account for your child in the cafeteria. We will use our "Forget Me Not" system again this year. If a student forgets his/ her lunch, parents may bring it to school before lunchtime. Please leave it on the shelf in the lobby (labeled with the student's name). Teachers will remind students to check the shelf before lunch.
Please have your child bring a pair of headphones with them daily. Students use headphones frequently to complete various activities and assessments.
We invite your child to bring a healthy snack to school each day. The snack needs to be something that is not messy and does not require silverware. We are going to be eating and working at the same time. Any snack that contains candy is not considered healthy. A few suggestions are: goldfish, cheerios, pretzels, grapes, raisins, carrots, etc. Your child’s snack must also be NUT-FREE.
Student Absences
If your student is absent for any reason, please email the following people:
your child's teacher
copy: paola.cervantes@gcisd.net and elissa.faught@gcisd.net
Arrival
Students report to the cafeteria starting at 7:25. Then they will be released from the cafeteria to their classrooms at 7:30 a.m. The tardy bell is at 7:35 a.m.
Ride Changes
If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please notify the office via email by at least 2:00 p.m. Teachers and our front office staff do not always have access to email or are busy teaching or helping others. A phone call is required. Sometimes we have only one person in the front office, so we want to provide ample time to be able to meet your needs. When making ride changes, picking up students for appointments and absences, please email both Sierra Salter (sierra.salter@gcisd.net) and Paola Cervantes (paola.cervantes@gcisd.net) in case one of us is out of the office.
Pick up Reminder
Students should be promptly picked up after school at 3:05. We appreciate your efforts to be on time to pick up your child. Finally, when dropping off or picking up your child, please pull your car all the way down to the end of the line. Duty personnel will send your child down to your car. This keeps the traffic flowing. Don’t forget your School Safe ID Number. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.
Communication
Please feel free to contact your homeroom teacher if you have any concerns or questions. We are happy to meet in person, call or email. We want to help immediately with any issues that arise.
As needs arise in our classrooms, we will put them here. We really appreciate your support for us and our students!
