Curriculum Notes
Reading and Writing
Ask your child:
What are they finding most challenging and most fun during their reading block?
Last week students learned how to identify Central Idea and Setting (the where and when) in a text. We also worked on Question Strategies before, during and after reading.
This week we will delve into Author's Purpose (P.I.E.) and Summarizing. In spelling we will focus on the "Floss Rule," which is double the final letters f, l, s, or z in a one-syllable word if they follow a single, short vowel sound.
We are starting spelling tests soon, too, so stay tuned for that. Lists for the week will be posted in this newsletter.
Math
Ask your child:
How did you do on your I-Ready Diagnostic test in math?
Which game did you like the most to work on fact fluency? Math Duel or Pet BIngo?
This week your little mathematicians worked on how to show their stamina during the "Technology" part of math workshop, along with partner work (games) and independent work. They worked on recognizing even/odd numbers and completed the Math BOY Diagnostic Tests.
Next week, they will begin to work on all the forms of a number. (standard, picture, expanded, & word) We will skip counting to 100 look for patterns of numbers, and learn to manipulate a number line. We always will incorporate math fact games into our week to practice addition or subtraction. Math fluency is so important in the younger grades, so we will be working on math fluency as well.
Science
Ask your child:
What is one topic they want to learn more about in Science this year?
The first week of school, students made a cover for their Science Journal, Their first entry was to write/draw what a scientist does and what a scientist might look like.
Next week, students will learn how scientists use small investigations to understand the difference between using science and engineering and how they work together. Students will also learn how to write a claim.
Claim: a statement that answers the essential question and that they believe to be true based on their observations
Social Studies
Ask your child
What is a responsibility that they have?
Last week, students set up their Social Studies notebook and we started talking about the August character trait of kindness.
This week, students will be brainstorming the different responsibilities they have at home, school and their local communities. We will discuss the characteristics of a community and that will lead us into how our communities work and help everyone.
Bucket Fillers
What does it mean to "fill someone else's bucket?" How could you fill someone's bucket?
This week, we discussed the importance of showing kindness to others. Students listened to the story, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?". We discussed the importance of filling someone else's bucket by acts of kindness. Students will be writing notes of kindness called "Bucket Fillers" each week. Students will write short, kind messages to their peers to fill their buckets. Look for these notes to come home every other week in your child's Great Tiger Folder.
