It's been another great week in 2nd grade. We are so lucky to have your students with us!
It was my first week back with the 2nd graders, and it was FABULOUS! Thank you for the lovely 2nd /grade level flowers that were sent to my family during this sad time for us. It truly was wonderful to be back with all of the kids and our staff. The hugs, the smiles, and the "welcome backs" were bucket filling!
Love,
Mrs. Lee :)

If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!

Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
Reading and Writing
Ask your child:
To tell you about the 4 stages of the Writing Process (brainstorm/prewrite, rough draft, edit & revise, and final copy).
Last week students were introduced to the elements of drama. They enjoyed reading The Puddle Puzzle giving us the opportunity to discuss what a fluent reader sounds like.
This week students will take their Module 2 test and we will begin our next unit "Look in the Middle." Our literary focus will be central idea and point of view.
Our writing will focus on persuasive text, plural nouns proper nouns, and possessive nouns.
Math
Ask your child
How did you do on your first Math TEKS assessement?
Which TEK or concept do you need to practice a little bit more?
Our awesome math whizzes took their 1st Nine Weeks TEKS check this Friday. This assessment covered the different forms of a number using place value, comparing and ordering numbers and placing numbers on a number line. We were so proud of them and how they showed their work.
Next week, we will begin fractions! In 2nd grade we cover a whole, halves, fourths, and eighths. We have a lot of fun things planned for them!
Please ask your child to show you some of the apps this coming week, so that they can pracice fractions. We will download them next week.
As always, please practice addition and subtraction facts nightly for about 10 minutes. This is their math homework. There are so many ways to practice fluency other than flashcards. I will share some each week. For starters, students have 3 fun apps on their iPads (Pet Bingo, Sushi Monster and Math Duel ).
Science
Ask your child:
What is the difference between a push and a pull?
This week, our scientists will conduct several investigations to understading what happens with objects are in motion and collide. We will also investigate how the strength of a push or pull will affect an object's motion.
Our investigations will include a marbles, play dough, pull cars, reems of paper, a can of beets, four-square balls and more! It will be a week of investigative fun!
Social Studies
Ask your child:
What impact can you have on your community now?
This week, 2nd graders will identify different kinds of historical sources and artifacts and explain how they can be used to study the past. We will do this using our Studies Weekly Newspaper curriculum.

Ways to Study at Home:
Quiz your child to narrow in on words they don't know.
Make learning multisensory by writing words in sand, glitter, or shaving cream.
Get outside and write the words with sidewalk chalk.
Use a highlighter to focus on the tough parts of the words. Then write the words 3 x each.
Play games like Hangman, Memory, or Word Scramble.
Note: When we assess students on these words we are not only looking for accuracy, but also at their ability to map out the sounds and patterns they hear. We are using this data to better support your child at school.
