We cannot believe that Spring Break is only a week away! Your children have grown LEAPS and BOUNDS this year so far!
We encourage your child to keep reading and practicing those math fluency skills at home over the break. Students are welcome to still get their Fluency Flight dragons and their minutes for Reading and Math. These are not mandatory, but will definitely help keep students on track over the break.
We are grateful for each of you and hope that you all have a wonderful and restful break with your family!!
If you are interested in having your child tested for telescoping, the link below will tell you all about the process, the dates of testing, deadline for registering.

Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing.(loop letters and up/down letters). This week they will learn how to write the lowercase case letters " c", "a", and "o". Later in the week they will write words that have a combination of all the letters they have learned up to this point. . Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.
Loop letters to review: l, e, h, b, f, k
Up/Down letters to review: i, j, p,u, w

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
What is an example of cause and effect?
Our 2nd graders are still focusing in module 8 this week.
We will read several fiction and non fiction stories. One of our focuses will be the story structure that creates the plot of different stories.
Another will be the how cause and effect is used in our stories and be able to name the difference. Students will use their own personal books as well as real life examples to showcase cause and effect.
Math
Ask your child ...
Which hand moves slower on an analog clock? The Minute Hand or the Hour Hand? Is it the longer or shorter hand?
This week, your 2nd grade mathematician learned the differences between an analog clock and a digital clock. We learned to tell time to the hour, half-hour, and to the 5 minute intervals. Also, we talked about activities we do during the A.M. hours and the P.M. hours of our days and nights.
Next week, we will continue to talk about A.M. and P.M. activites and practice telling time to the nearest minute. The 2nd graders are so excited to be learning to tell time!
Please encourage your 2nd grader to check their minutes on I-Ready. We aim for 10 minutes daily in both math and reading. So, by the end of the day, this is the break down:
Monday: 10 minutes
Tuesday: 20 minutes
Wednesday: 30minutes
Thursday: 40 minutes
Friday: 50 minutes.
Science
Ask your child ...
What is one ecosystem that you learned about and what is a plant that grows there?
Scientists this week will explore different ecosystems. We will talk about how plant life survives in each of those ecosystems.
We will research different plant structures and the physical characteristics needed in those environments to help those plants survive.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
What does the world Culture mean?
Social Studies this week will have our students looking at what defines a culture and what are ways that different cultures express themselves.
Students will also learn about many different celebrations around the state of Texas and how people celebrate them with food, clothing, lights, gatherings, songs and more.
If your family has a special celebration that you are apart of and would like to share it with the class, please reach out to your homeroom teacher!
No New Spelling List This Week!
Students will be tested on the different NW High Frequency Word Lists.

Second graders have been visiting the library weekly and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
