Last week our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing. By the end of next week, they will have learned the lower-case letters : i, j, p, l, e, h, b, f, and k. We will connect those letters to create words soon. Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
their reading goal for 2026 (again). Success is achieved through practice.
This week students will continue reading and writing poetry and learn about cause and effect.
Is your child reading every night? This is a 2nd grade expectation and will reinforce the work we do here at school. Stamina is a challenge for many of our students, so we suggest finding a chapter book that you and your child would like to read together. Taking turns reading will allow them to interact with books that may be too challenging for them to read on their own. Remember, the goal is for our children to want to read.
Math
Ask your child ...
What is a polygon? What are the requirements to be in the "Polygon Club?"
This past week, we learned about 2D shapes. We learned how to identify the number of sides and vertices of shapes such as: triangles, all of the quadrilaterals; pentagons, hexagons, and octagons.
Next week, we wil learn how to compose & decompose 2D shapes. We will also learn the attributes of 3D shapes: edges, faces, bases, and vertices.
Please continue to work on their subtraction facts. The Subtraction App is a great way for your child to practice regrouping two digit numbers.
Science
Ask your child ...
How can we record and measure weather data?
Our scientists are starting a new unit about Weather and Sky! It is so exciting to see our Social Studies, Science and ELA aligning with weather and maps.
Student's will focus this week on 3 main weather tools, such as a thermometer, rain gauge and a wind vane. We will use these tools to take data on the weather each day.
Students will also be discussing possible severe weather across Texas and U.S. such as hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. Our focus will be on the patterns we see when we analyze where each severe weather event happens.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
to share what they learned last week in social studies.
You should hear about maps, globes, cardinal directions, and map scale. Students love looking at maps, so if you have any at home, pull them out and let them explore. It's also a great time to talk about places your family has traveled to and/or would like to visit in the future.

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
