Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing. By the end of this coming week, they will have learned the lower-case letters : i, j, p, l, e, h, b, f, and k. We will connect those letters to create words soon. Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
to share some of their favorite books from 2nd grade.
Last week we started our "Weather Wise" unit focusing on vocabulary, point of view, and text organization. This week we will shift to author's purpose, practice making connections to self-texts-world, and learn to "evaluate" what we read, that is, determine the important parts and how they all work together.
In writing we are continuing to write and evaluate poetry, which includes the use of figurative language.
Math
Ask your child ...
How do you know a shape is a quadrilateral?
What is the difference between a face and a base on a 3D shape?
This past week we launched into our 3D solids study. ( cube, rectangular prism, sphere, triangular prism, cone, and cylinder.) We continued to work with ways to compose and decompose 2D shapes. Also, we reviewed interpreting graphs.
Next week, we wil learn how to classify and sort 3D shapese & work on decomposing and composing 2D shapes. Also, we will review how to count a group of coins and how to write the amount correctly,
Please continue to work on their subtraction facts and 2 digit subtraction. .The Subtraction App is a great way for your child to practice regrouping two digit numbers.
Science
Ask your child ...
How can we record and measure weather data?
Our scientists are started a new unit about Weather and Sky! It is so exciting to see our Social Studies, Science and ELA aligning with weather and maps.
Student's will focus this week on 3 main weather tools, such as a thermometer, rain gauge and a wind vane. We will use these tools to take data on the weather each day.
Students will also be discussing possible severe weather across Texas and U.S. such as hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. Our focus will be on the patterns we see when we analyze where each severe weather event happens.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
if they can identify the country, state, and city they live in. Also, does your child know his/her address?
We will be reviewing all of this next week, as well as, the continents and oceans of the world.

Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)

Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
