This week is Read Across America week!
Each morning, your Tiger will listen to a read aloud of a story through our Tiger Time News morning show. We are so excited to celebrate this week, and cannot wait to see your Tiger dressed up in all of the themes!
We encourage you to continue the celebrations by reading at home each night with your Tiger! 📚
Don't forget to pack 2 snacks for your child each day! They sure do get hungry if they forget!

Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing.(loop letters and up/down letters). This week they will learn how to write the lowercase case letters " c", "a", and "o". Later in the week they will write words that have a combination of all the letters they have learned up to this point. . Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.
Loop letters to review: l, e, h, b, f, k
Up/Down letters to review: i, j, p,u, w

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
What are the structures of a story?
This week we dig into Module 8 of our HMH curriculum. This week we will look at Non-Fiction text features while reading about how a seed turns into a Pine Tree. Students will also read and explore Folk tales while discussing the story structures of Characters, Setting, Problem, and Resolution.
In writing, we will continue writing an imaginary writing piece and taking it through the entire writing process. We will also continue our practice of commas in a series.
Math
Ask your child ...
How did you do on your TEKS check in math over Money, Graphing, Geometry, and Length?
Our 2nd graders finished up their measurement activities and took their Math TEKS check over all the concepts we have covered so far this Nine Weeks.
Next week, we will be learning how to tell time on an analog clock and on a digital clock. This week we will work on telling time to the hour, half-hour, and to the 5 minute intervals. Please help them at home with an analog clock.
Please encourage your 2nd grader to check their minutes on I-Ready. We aim for 10 minutes daily in both math and reading. So, by the end of the day, this is the break down:
Monday: 10 minutes
Tuesday: 20 minutes
Wednesday: 30minutes
Thursday: 40 minutes
Friday: 50 minutes.
Science
Ask your child ...
What are the parts of plant and how do they help the plant survive?
This past week, our scientists looked at different plants to identify their parts and how their parts help them to survive.
They explored the parts of an apple, flowering plant and a succulent.
Scientists also discussed how they use water, air and other animals to spread seeds and pollinate.
A fun at home idea would be to plant a lima bean or some radish seeds. These fast growing seeds would allow students to see how seeds grow into a plant right before their eyes.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
What does the world Culture mean?
Social Studies this week will have our students looking at what defines a culture and what are ways that different cultures express themselves.
Students will also learn about many different celebrations around the state of Texas and how people celebrate them with food, clothing, lights, gatherings, songs and more.
If your family has a special celebration that you are apart of and would like to share it with the class, please reach out to your homeroom teacher!

Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
