It's that time of year where many students are coming to school with devices that are not charged. While if it happens every once, it is not a big deal. But, when it continually happens, it can be a disruption to the classroom. It is especially challenging when there are a lot of students needing to charge their ipads, and they didn't bring their chargers. Please help your child by creating a routine to help them remember to charge their devices. You could also set an alarm for every weeknight at 7:00 to help them remember to charge it before bed. Thank you for your help and support at home.
If you are interested in having your child tested for telescoping, the link below will tell you all about the process, the dates of testing, deadline for registering, and more.

Our 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing.(loop letters and up/down letters). This coming week we will have introduced all of the loop letters and up/down letters. This week they will learn how to write the lowercase case letters "u" and "w" Later in the week they will write words that have a combination of all the letters they have learned up to this point. . Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.
Loop letters to review: l, e, h, b, f, k
Up/Down letters to review: i, j, p,r, s, t, u, w,

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
What strategies they use when they come to a word they don't know in their reading?
We are wrapping up our biography unit this week focusing on central idea and nonfiction text features. Students will take their module test on Wednesday.
In writing, we will continue working on our maginary narratives. Last week we did the prewrite portions of brainstorming and planning. This week we’ll write our rough drafts and edit/revise. We look forward to sharing this piece with you at Open House on March 5.

Math
Ask your child ...
How do you measure the correct length of an object, if it doesn't begin at the 0 on a ruler?
This week our 2nd grade mathematicians worked with measurement using a rulers, cm cubes, and inch tiles. They discoverd the meaning of inverse operations. Also, they practiced making good estimations for the length of an object by using what we know about inch tiles and cm cubes.
On Thursday, we will review money, graphing, area, geometry, and mesurement to prepare for our Math TEKS check.
Please encourage your 2nd grader to check their minutes on I-Ready. We aim for 10 minutes daily in both math and reading. So, by the end of the day, this is the break down:
Monday: 10 minutes
Tuesday: 20 minutes
Wednesday: 30minutes
Thursday: 40 minutes
Friday: 50 minutes.
Science
Ask your child ...
What are the parts of plant and how do they help the plant survive?
This week, our scientists will be looking at different plants to identify their parts and how their parts help them to survive.
We will look at the parts of an apple, flowering plant and a succulent.
Scientists will also discuss how they use water, air and other animals to spread seeds and pollinate.
A fun at home idea would be to plant a lima bean or some radish seeds. These fast growing seeds would allow students to see how seeds grow into a plant right before their eyes.
Social Studies
Ask your child...
What are some modifications that you see in our community today? Do they have any positive or negative consequences?
Social Studies this week will have our students looking at what defines a culture and what are ways that different cultures express themselves.
Students will also learn about many different celebrations around the state of Texas and how people celebrate them with food, clothing

Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
