We want to thank you for all the wonderful things you did to make the Christmas parties a success for our 2nd graders! They had so much fun, and everyone had a smile on their face! Also, we want to thank you for the sweet cards and thoughtful gifts that you showered us with. The most precious gift you gave us this fall, however, was the gift of time with your precious child. We are looking forward to the spring semester with them.
Much love,
The 2nd Grade Teachers
This week 2nd graders officially started learning the strokes of cursive writing. By the end of next week, they will have learned the lower-case letters : l, e, h, b, f, and k. We will connect those letters to create words soon. Please encourage your child to continue practicing the letters as they come home, but please do not work ahead. It is SO hard to unteach bad habits with cursive writing. In 2nd grade students will learn all the lowercase letters, and the uppercase of their first name. We just need them to to be patient, to trust the process that takes time, and to just practice the letters that we have covered.

Reading and Writing
Ask your child...
to make a reading goal for the remainder of the school year. Ideas include setting a specific number of books they'd like to read; perhaps reading their first chapter book; or rereading familiar books out loud focusing on fluency.
We are starting a new reading unit this week focused on weather. Students will practice identifying point of view and review nonfiction text features.
We are also starting poetry! Always a favorite of the kids. Students will be exposed to a variety of poems including haikus, couplets, and acrostics and practice using rhyme, rhythm, and figurative language to create one-of-a-kind pieces.
No spelling list this week. Instead we will focus on high fequency words and review previously taught spelling patterns/rules.
Math
Ask your child ...
What is a polygon? Can you tell me some examples of what is a polygon and what is not a polygon?
This week our 2nd graders started their Geometry Unit with 2-D shapes. We learned that polygons are closed shapes that have at least 3 straight sides and vertices. We created 2-D shapes with a lot of different materials (playdough, toothpicks, pattern blocks, and craft sticks). We will continue to work on 2-D shapes for a few more weeks before we begin 3-D shapes. Please check each night to be sure your child has their green drgaon on i-Ready, and that they have completed their 10 minutes daiily work on their Path in I-Eeady.
Science
Social Studies
Ask your child...
to locate Texas on a state map and other states important to your family.
We are starting our "Interacting with the Environment" unit this week. First up, mapping. Students will learn the key components of a map, including; the title, legend (aka. key), and compass rose. They will also learn the difference between a political and physical map.

Picking up or Any Ride Changes: Please email Sierra Salter, sierra.salter@gcisd.net and PaolaCervantes, paola.cervantes@gcisd.net, prior to 2:00, if your child is going home a different way than normal.
At 2:30, the office lets each teacher know of these changes, so that we can let students know. If your child is not on our email list from the office about a ride change, we cannot let them go home differently. Your child's safety is our top priority.
Thank you so much!
Second graders started visiting the library a couple weeks ago and are loving it. Mrs. Quinn is the best, as are the new Maker Spaces she's set up for us to explore after checking out our books. Students are allowed to check out two books per week this year. Please help your child take care of their library books by following the rules they have learned and make sure they are in backpacks and ready to return on their scheduled library day. Also, please keep the audio books inside their case, when not in use, so that they do not get lost. Thank you!
Mrs. Miller: Mondays (9:30-10:00)
Mrs. Sifford: Wednesday (10:00-10:30)
Mrs. Lee: Thursdays (10:15-10:45)
Please send your child with two healthy (nut free) snacks. They may want a morning and afternoon snack.
Please make sure student iPads are plugged in every evening before bed, so that they are fully charged for class the next day. Students also need a pair of working headphones.
No wireless headphones please.
Students go to PE every day. Please make sure they are wearing (or have in their backpack) a good pair of closed toe shoes (sneakers).
If you are going to come up and have lunch with your child, please try and let your teacher know the day before. You can sit in the front foyer or outside at the tables.
Lunch Time: 11:15 - 11:45am
If your child forgets a lunch, water bottle or ipad, you can simply come and bring the item up to OCT. There is a bookshelf on the left hand side that is labeled for each grade level. If you place it on the shelf, we will make sure your child gets it.
