At O. C. Taylor, we LOVE you.Ā We think you're children are GGGRRRRREAT! šš§”
š š» Parents, please remind your student to charge their Chromebook every night.Ā Ā
Curriculum
š§® Math - This week we will learn how to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers using the standard algorithm.Ā We will also use what we learned about rounding to estimate products with a fun fall wreath activity. šPlease continue to have your child work on their multiplication/division facts every night!Ā
š§Ŗ Science - In Science, we have wrapped up our learning about properties of matter, and moving on to mixtures and solutions.Ā This week, the students will focus on mixtures.Ā They will engage in a hands-on investigation, read an article, and participate in activities.
š Reading: Get Ready to Go Wild with Nonfiction! š¾
Our young zoologists are diving headfirst into the fascinating world of animal nonfiction! This week, students will "paws" to examine text structures and learn why authors choose them to help readers better understand the wild facts. Partnering up, students will put their creative claws to work by designing and describing their own Nat Geo-style episode blurb featuring a specific animal. But thatās not allāthings are about to get fierce! Readers will research and face off in an epic "Who Would Win?" showdown, using evidence to back up their champion creature. It's going to be a wildly educational adventure!Ā
āļø Writing: Ā Hear Them ROAR! š¤š¦
This week in writing, students will be turning up the volume on figurative language as they analyze Katy Perryās hit song āRoar.ā From metaphors to similes, theyāll uncover how powerful words can pack a punch! Building on their nonfiction animal research, students will then channel their inner poet to create a āGuess Who?ā description of their chosen animalāusing figurative language to keep readers guessing and roaring with excitement. It's going to be a lyrical and literary jungle out there!Ā
š Social Studies - Students will be starting unit 2 this week. We will learn about how the first people came to America (land bridge). This unit is also focused around regions and the Native American tribes that occupy those regions. We will also discuss in detail the tribes regarding their gov't structure, how they live based on the characteristics of the region they occupied and their culture. We're going to have so much fun taking a deep dive into the Native American way of life!

Reading Module TIPS
Have yourchild keep a growing list of the Critical Vocabulary words. Quiz each other on their meanings.
Reading Check in:
Turn Up the Tunes and Talk About the Lyrics š¶
Listen to songs together (clean versions, of course!) and ask your child what the lyrics really mean. Can they spot any similes, metaphors, or personification? Songs like āRoarā are packed with figurative languageāand turning the car ride into a mini lesson can make it fun and meaningful!Ā
Anything that your child does not finish in class will be homework.Ā It will be marked as "Math HW" in their orange GREAT Tiger Folder.Ā We would also like for your child to work on their multiplication and/or division facts for 10 minutes each night.
We want the students to read for at least 20 minutes or more every night.Ā This is the only reading homework we require!
BOOK CLUBSĀ
Help your reader stay on track with their assigned reading by looking at the bookmark dates. Being prepared makes for a great book club discussion!
Lunch for fourth grade is from 12:20-12:50.Ā Donāt forget to set up a lunch account for your child in the cafeteria. We will use our "Forget Me Not" system again this year. If a student forgets his/ her lunch, parents may bring it to school before lunchtime. Please leave it on the shelf in the lobby (labeled with the student's name). Teachers will remind students to check the shelf before lunch.
Please have your child bring a pair of headphones with them daily.Ā Students use headphones frequently to complete various activities and assessments.Ā
We invite your child to bring a healthy snack to school each day. The snack needs to be something that is not messy and does not require silverware. We are going to be eating and working at the same time. Any snack that contains candy is not considered healthy. A few suggestions are: goldfish, cheerios, pretzels, grapes, raisins, carrots, etc. Your childās snack must also be NUT-FREE.
Student Absences
Ā If your student is absent for any reason, please email the following people:
your child's teacherĀ

Arrival
Students report to the cafeteria starting at 7:25. Then they will be released from the cafeteria to their classrooms at 7:30 a.m.Ā The tardy bell is at 7:35 a.m.
Ride Changes
If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please notify the office via email by at least 2:00 p.m. Teachers and our front office staff do not always have access to email or are busy teaching or helping others. A phone call is required. Sometimes we have only one person in the front office, so we want to provide ample time to be able to meet your needs. When making ride changes, picking up students for appointments and absences,Ā please email both Sierra Salter (sierra.salter@gcisd.net) and Paola Cervantes (paola.cervantes@gcisd.net) in case one of us is out of the office. Ā
Pick up Reminder
Students should be promptly picked up after school at 3:05. We appreciate your efforts to be on time to pick up your child. Finally, when dropping off or picking up your child, please pull your car all the way down to the end of the line. Duty personnel will send your child down to your car. This keeps the traffic flowing. Donāt forget your School Safe ID Number. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.
