Year 5 Transition Day (Physics)

CLEAPSS Transition activity : Learning practical work skills through electromagnetism (CLEAPSS Document PP127)

Students to assemble the equipment by themselves

Equipment required:

• Blue power pack set at a maximum of 3V

• 1 x red lead & 1 x black lead

• 2 x croc clips

• 1 x soft iron rod (5B5)

• Copper insulated wire (5B5) enough to make at least 60 coils

• Pot of large paperclips (5B5)

Teacher Demonstration activities:

• Ferrofluid & magnets (Super magnets tray - 5B6) plus 2 x C cores (6A3) & a 120 Turn Coil unit (6A3)

• Liquid nitrogen and very strong magnets (Steve to provide) for quantum levitation demo
