Recipe 17 : Making Bromine water (250ml) Hazcaard 15A,15B safety sheet No 55
Use a fume cupboard face shield and chemical gloves
Have sodium thiosulfate ready in case of spillage and cleaning equipment 2 L beaker full to be able to dip hand in it in case of silt on skins. and a small one to clean pipette with.
Use a electric Magnetic Stirrer in the fume cabinet.
Fill a 250 ml conical flask with some Distilled water. move it as close as possible to the bromine bottle to avoid split in transfer, put it on the bench close the bromine bottle then, put it on top of the magnetic stirrer with a magnet inside.
Using a Glass pipette pipette add about 1/2 ml of Bromine liquid to the 250 ml conical flask dipping the pipette into the water to dilute all the bromine. and switch on the stirrer to dissolve the Bromine. (Do NOT heat) then transfer the bromine water to a poly-stop bottle (from Yellow cab ).
When no more Bromine is dissolving pour carefully into the poly-top bottle (empty bottle kept in yellow cab.) to about 250 ml (if some bromine are left to dissolve leave it on conical flask when pouring to bottle and rinse with thiosulfate (until it become white))
rinse everything with Sodium Thiosulfate
Method 1 for 1Litre
1. Use a fume cupboard. Wear splash proof goggles or a face shield and gloves. Take great care when opening bottles* of bromine liquid on warm days.
*Alternatively, an ampule containing 1 cm 3 of bromine liquid can be used. See over for detailed guidance on opening bromine ampules.
2. Using a glass pipette, add 1 cm 3 of bromine liquid to 500 cm 3 of water in a 1 dm3 (1 Litre) beaker that contains a magnetic stirrer bar (flea).
3. Place the beaker on a magnetic stirrer and start the stirrer (do not heat). Select a speed that avoid creating splashes. Stir until the bromine has completely dissolved. This can take over 20 minutes.
4. Dilute the solution to 1 dm3 (1 litre) with water.
5. Pour the solution into a labelled bottle. Include hazard warning and/or control measure information on the label if appropriate.
