Preparing 2.5 L of limewater solution in a bottle
1. Wear eye protection.
2. Weigh out 5 g of calcium hydroxide.
3. Add the solid, with stirring, to 300 cm3 of water in a large beaker (eg, 600 cm3 ).
4. Continue to stir the suspension and pour it via a funnel into a clean, labelled 2.5 dm3 (2.5 L) screw-top bottle.
5. Fill the bottle with distilled water. Replace the stopper on the bottle and ensure it is firmly closed. Invert the bottle several times to thoroughly mix the contents.
6. Leave the bottle overnight to allow the suspension to settle.
7. When required, slowly (to avoid disturbing the sediment) decant the limewater solution into small, labelled bottles for use in lessons. Include hazard warning and/or control measure information on the labels. Currently, limewater is not classified as hazardous. However, experience of the use of limewater in school activities indicates that it is appropriate to treat it as at least a skin and eye irritant. Wear eye protection.
8. Add more distilled water and/or calcium hydroxide to the stock bottle as required.
