Home Office Permanent Secretary Resignation

Philip Rutnam’s departure. Where next for the Home Office?

Coronavirus

Latest information on the gov.uk website if you think you have symptoms of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and keep checking for updates on Horizon (Home Office staff).

Members will have seen news of the public resignation of Sir Philip Rutnam, Home Office Permanent Secretary.

Philip Rutnam is taking legal action over his treatment, supported by his union FDA, claiming constructive dismissal. PCS also supports the FDA union’s call for a full independent inquiry into this matter.

PCS are concerned by the manner of his departure. His tenure in the Home Office was marked by a commitment to engagement with our union and members. We were pleased to work closely, specifically on tackling bullying and harassment in the workplace. We hope his replacement continues with this commitment and work.

Allegations made regarding bullying from Ministers is deeply troubling. Our union is committed to the eradication of this pervasive behaviour in the workplace, and this must be met with an equal commitment from elected officials.

PCS already had a meeting with Shona Dunn scheduled for 27 March. We are pressing to keep this meeting to discuss with Shona her plans for the direction of the Home Office following Philip Rutnam’s departure.
