• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?/¿Qué significa, para ti, ser una graduada universitaria de primera generación?

To me being the first person in my family to attend a university and be graduating this year is such an honor because I am aware of all the sacrifices my family had to make for me to be living this dream. My mother and father both immigrated to the U.S. so I could have the opportunity to acquire a higher education. Unfortunately, when I was six-years-old, my father passed away. I give thanks to God, because he blessed me with such a strong mother who was inevitably always there for me, reminding me that I was never alone and that she would always make sure that I accomplished my dreams. It is hard to not mention that despite feeling so happy to start this new journey in my life, I was also afraid to separate myself from my mother and little sister, Abigail! These past four years have been inevitably challenging especially as a First-Generation student because I had to learn through my mistakes how to find a sense of belonging while attending UCSD, but through these tough times of feeling Imposter Syndrome and trying to find a community that felt like home, I was able to grow and mature so much as a person! I can now say - it was all worth it! Those late nights studying, at times even crying, or moments of self-doubt, they were all worth it because I would not be the person that I am today without those experiences! This diploma is not just for me, but it goes out to my parents - my number #1 supporters! This is also dedicated to all Latinx First-Gen graduates - Si se pudo!!!

Para mi, ser la primera persona en mi familia en ir a la universidad y poder graduarme este año es un gran honor. Soy consciente de todos los sacrificios que mi familia ha tenido que hacer para que yo pueda realizar este sueño. Mis padres emigraron a los EEUU para que yo pudiera tener la oportunidad de una educación superior. Desgraciadamente, cuando tenía seis años, mi padre falleció. Yo le agradezco a dios por la bendición de tener una madre tan fuerte, que siempre me ha apoyado, recordándome que siempre estaría a mi lado asegurándose de que lograra mis sueños. A pesar de estar feliz de comenzar mi nueva aventura en la universidad, también resultó difícil separarme de mi madre y mi hermanita pequeña, Abigail! Inevitablemente estos cuatro años han sido un desafío, especialmente como estudiante universitaria de primera generación. Tuve que aprender a través de mis propios errores como encontrar un sentido de pertenencia en UCSD, pero, a través de los momentos difíciles de síndrome del impostor y buscando una comunidad que se sintiera familiar, logre crecer y madurar mucho como persona! Puedo decir ahora- ¡valió la pena! Esas largas noches estudiando, a veces llorando, y con momentos de falta de confianza en mí misma, valieron la pena, ¡pues no sería la persona que soy hoy sin esas experiencias! Este diploma no es solo para mi, es tambien de mis padres- ¡mi gran apoyo! También se lo dedico a todos los graduados de Latinx First-Gen - Si se pudo!!!

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?/¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

One of my proudest moments at UCSD would be being able to mentor first-years and transfer students as they are transitioning to UCSD. It has been such a humbling and rewarding experience to do this, because I was once them! I remember the fears, the questions, the doubts, and yet the excitement one has when coming to UCSD especially as a first-generation student that comes from a low-income family and marginalized community. During my second year, I myself had a mentor from OASIS and through her, I was able to realize something very important. It is so easy to start comparing yourself with others as you are all trying to find a sense of belonging at UCSD. I realized that if I was there, it was because I had earned that position through my hard-work and maybe I just had to study a little harder than others to succeed and that was okay, because that was my journey and at the end of the day, we will all reach the finish line no matter what path you take. Here I am today, reaching that finish-line! First-year Yalila would be so proud!

Uno de los momentos de mayor orgullo para mi en UCSD, fue poder servir de mentora a los estudiantes de primer año mientras realizaban su transición a UCSD. Fue una experiencia muy gratificante pues yo había estado en su lugar. Recordé los miedos, las preguntas, las dudas pero también la emoción con que uno llega a UCSD, especialmente como estudiante de primera generación proveniente de una familia de bajo ingreso y de una comunidad marginalizada. Durante mi segundo año, yo tuve una mentora de OASIS y a través de ella comprendí algo muy importante. Es fácil compararse con otros mientras se busca un sentido de pertenencia en UCSD, pero me di cuenta, que si estaba allí es porque lo había logrado con mi esfuerzo y trabajo. Quizás yo tendría que estudiar un poco más que otros estudiantes para tener éxito, pero ese seria mi camino y finalmente todos llegaríamos a la meta independiente de nuestra ruta. ¡Hoy estoy aquí, llegando a esta meta! ¡La Yalila de primer año estaría muy orgullosa!

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

My advice to everyone is to take on experiences that they truly love and that you are passionate about, because that is what will allow you to give it your all while doing them! Don't just take on leadership roles because they mark off a checklist for post-graduation requirements, do them because you love them or because you want to learn something new! Coming to UCSD and being a part of Revelle, was a journey of growth and maturity where I was able to overcome my mistakes and times of doubt and thankfully excel academically and also learned to be a leader and a mentor! While in college, I have dedicated my time to something that I am very passionate about and that is working with students! I have been able to be a Peer Leader/Mentor for incoming first-years and transfer students because I am aware of the fear and doubts one may have coming into college. I have also taken on the roles of being an Instructional Assistant and Tutor in the Biology Department and have been able to do what I love! Taking on these positions has not only allowed me to give back and make a difference, but I have also grown and learned so much from them!

Mi consejo es buscar experiencias que realmente ames, por las que sientas pasión, pues es lo que te permitirá darle todo tu empeño! No asumas roles de liderazgo solo por tachar un requerimiento de post-graduado, hazlo porque de veras te gusta o porque quieres aprender algo nuevo! Llegar a UCSD y ser parte de Revelle, fue una aventura de crecimiento y maduración, en la que tuve que sobrellevar errores y momentos de dudas, pero también logre sobresalir en lo académico y aprendí a ser líder y mentora! Durante mi trayecto universitario, me he dedicado a algo que me apasiona, que es trabajar con estudiantes! He podido ser líder y mentora estudiantil para los estudiantes de primer año o que se transfieren, pues conozco bien las dudas y temores que uno tiene al entrar en la universidad. También he asumido roles de Asistente de Instrucción y Tutora en la Facultad de Biología y he podido hacer lo que me apasiona. Estos roles me han permitido no solo brindar apoyo a mi comunidad, sino que también me han hecho crecer y aprender mucho!

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

I would not be here today if it was not for my mother’s unconditional support! Since the moment that my father passed away, my mother has become my number #1 support system and that is the reason that I dedicate this diploma to her! She has seen me cry, be happy, but overall has been there every day making sure I kept on pushing towards my dream! I also give thanks to my family for always keeping me in their prayers every time I had an exam or job interview coming up. For my dad in Heaven, I dedicate this huge accomplishment to him. It has always been hard to experience these huge milestones in my life because I always have this strong desire that when I look out to the crowd, I would see both of my parents, but from Heaven above, I know my dad is happy to see me graduate and accomplish this goal in my life! Lastly, I just want to thank all my beautiful and genuine friends that I met along the way! Every single one of you will always have a place in my heart! I’m leaving UCSD, but taking with me genuine friendships that feel like family!

Yo no estuviera aquí hoy si no fuese por el incondicional apoyo de mi madre! Desde el momento en que mi padre falleció, ella constituye mi sistema de apoyo primordial y por esta razón le dedico este diploma! Ella me ha visto llorar, estar contenta, pero por encima de todo ha estado junto a mi dia-a-dia cerciorándose de que siga mi sueño! También le agradezco a mi familia por recordarme en sus oraciones cada vez que tenía algún examen o entrevista de trabajo. A mi padre en el Cielo le dedico este gran logro. Siempre ha sido difícil atravesar estos grandes hitos de mi vida pues siento un enorme deseo de mirar hacia la multitud y encontrar a mis padres, pero desde el Cielo, se que mi padre está feliz de verme graduada y lograr este objetivo de mi vida! Por último, quiero agradecerle a todas mis bellas amistades, tan genuinas, que conocí por el camino! Cada una de ustedes tendrá siempre un espacio en mi corazón. Dejo atrás a UCSD, pero me llevo amistades genuinas que son como si fueran familia!

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

I would like to give thanks to the OASIS staff for being there for me during my second year of college, Katy Brecht for believing in me and providing me with my first job position at UCSD, Maria Rodriguez and Belinda Zamacona from CASP for believing in me and allowing me to be a Peer Mentor to many students that were once in my position and for always allowing me to feel a sense of belonging in CASP as a staff member, Michele Ojeda for always listening to my financial needs and supporting me in that manner as a financial aid advisor, to all my amazing Professors that have supported me along the way - thank you for all of your help and advice that you have given me! Lastly, thank you Dr. Meaders for being such a huge support system during my last quarter at UCSD! Thank you for becoming my Thesis Advisor and allowing me to continue my education as I strive towards my Master’s in Biology in the Fall! I appreciate every single of you and thank God for placing you in my life!

Me gustaría agradecerle al personal de OASIS por su apoyo en el segundo año de la universidad. En particular quisiera agradecer a Katy Brecht por creer en mí y proporcionarme mi primer puesto de trabajo en UCSD, a Maria Rodriguez y a Belinda Zamacona de CASP por creer en mí y darme la oportunidad de ser Mentora Estudiantil para muchos estudiantes que estuvieron en mi lugar y también por el sentido de pertenencia como personal de CASP y a Michele Ojeda por siempre escuchar mis necesidades financieras y apoyarme como consejera financiera. También quiero agradecerle a todos mis profesores fabulosos, que tanto me han apoyado- gracias por toda la ayuda y los consejos que me han dado! Por último, gracias Dr. Meaders por ser un gran sistema de apoyo en el último trimestre en UCSD! Gracias por convertirse en mi tutor de tesis y por permitirme continuar mi educación realizando una maestría en biología este otoño! Los aprecio mucho a todos y le doy gracias a Dios por ponerlos en mi camino!

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

My plans are to participate in the contiguous BS/MS program here at UCSD after graduating! I hope to acquire my Master's in Biology in pursuit to acquire a career as a Professor at a Community College! As for long-term goals, I truly aspire to one day be able to open a mobile clinic and implement food drops in communities that lack these sustainable and healthy resources with friends that are pursuing their careers in medicine and public health. I also hope to be able to build a school in an underserved community where children and even adults are able to learn how to read, write, and even become educated on preventative measures because I am a firm believer that everyone deserves the right to have the means to proper resources such as healthcare, food security, education, and a home. Overall, I hope to be genuinely happy and reach a point in my life where I can finally say, I did it! I was able to accomplish all of my dreams!

Mi plan al graduarme es incorporarme al programa contiguo de Licenciatura/Maestría de UCSD! Espero adquirir mi maestría en biología con el objetivo de hacer una carrera como profesora en una universidad local. A largo plazo espero poder abrir una clínica móvil e implementar la entrega de alimentos en comunidades de bajos recursos, en colaboración con amistades que continuarán sus carreras en medicina y salud pública. Espero también construir una escuela en alguna comunidad desatendida, donde niños y adultos puedan aprender a leer, escribir y obtener una educación en medidas preventivas, pues tengo la certeza de que todos merecen medios y recursos para tener una vida saludable, con seguridad alimentaria, educación y un hogar. Deseo llegar a ser genuinamente feliz y llegar a un punto en mi vida en el que pueda decir: ¡Lo logre! ¡He podido cumplir todos mis sueños!
