• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?/¿Qué significa, para ti, ser una graduada universitaria de primera generación?

To me, being a first-generation college graduate means defying and succeeding in a system never really meant and design for me. Also, it means much more than me because I would not be here without the sacrifices of my family and the support of my community back home. This achievement is for future first-generation college students to prove to them that they too can make it at their respective universities like UC San Diego.

Para mí, ser un graduado universitario de primera generación significa desafiar y triunfar en un sistema que nunca estuvo pensado ni diseñado para mí. Además, implica mucho más que a mí solo porque no estaría aquí sin los sacrificios de mi familia y el apoyo de la comunidad de la que vengo. Este logro es para los futuros estudiantes universitarios de primera generación, para demostrarles que ellos también pueden lograrlo en sus respectivas universidades como la UC San Diego.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?/¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment throughout my time at UC San Diego was being awarded the Leader of the Year for the Multicultural Greek Council at this year's Sorority and Fraternity Life Awards because this is an accomplishment that highlights and validates my efforts towards this community.

El momento del que me siento más orgulloso durante mi paso por la Universidad de California San Diego es el de haber sido galardonada con el premio de Líder del Año del Consejo Griego Multicultural en la ceremonia de Premios a la Vida de las Hermandades y Fraternidades de este año, porque es un logro que destaca y convalida mis esfuerzos para con esta comunidad.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

To future first-gen students, my best advice is bet on yourself. There will be moments when you question if you are meant to be at this UC San Diego. You belong and that begins with believing in yourself and amazing things will come your way. Also, find a support system at this University that can help support and motivate you when needed. I promise you these people will be there when you most need them!

A los futuros estudiantes de primera generación, mi mejor consejo es que apuesten por ustedes. Habrá momentos en los que se preguntarán si pertenecen a esta UC San Diego. Ustedes pertenecen y eso comienza con creer en sí mismos y las grandes cosas vendrán a ustedes. Además, encuentren un sistema de apoyo en esta Universidad que pueda ayudarlos y motivarlos cuando lo necesiten. Les prometo que estas personas estarán ahí cuando más las necesiten.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

The people that have been the most influential throughout my college journey have been my family, friends, and high school mentors. My parents believed in me and did everything they could to help support me emotionally and financially throughout these past four years. Also, I am forever thankful for my siblings and relatives for always just checking in on me whenever they felt they needed too. Those phone calls and check-ins meant everything for me. I am forever thankful for my friends and mentors for their words of encouragement and constant support. I would like to thank my best friends for always being there for me when I needed them the most and for that I am forever grateful! Overall, I am thankful for the village that supported me throughout my journey at UC San Diego.

Las personas que más han influido en mi trayectoria universitaria han sido mi familia, mis amigos y mis mentores del instituto. Mis padres creyeron en mí e hicieron todo lo posible para ayudarme emocional y económicamente durante estos últimos cuatro años. Además, estoy eternamente agradecida a mis hermanos y parientes por estar siempre pendientes de mí cuando sentían que lo necesitaba. Esas llamadas telefónicas y ese apoyo significaron todo para mí. Estoy eternamente agradecida a mis amigos y mentores por sus palabras de ánimo y su apoyo constante. Me gustaría dar las gracias a mis mejores amigos por haber estado siempre a mi lado cuando más los necesitaba, y por ello les estaré siempre agradecido. En general, estoy agradecido por mi pueblo que me apoyó a lo largo de mi viaje en la UC San Diego.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

The people that have been the most influential throughout my college journey have been my Sorority and Fraternity Life Advisors. Chloe, thank you for always being there through the good and the bad. I am cannot imagine navigating my college journey without your constant support and guidance. Oscar, thank you for just checking-in with me whenever you had the time. Kelley, thank you for just being a huge motivator these last couple of months. Jenny and Rosalie, thank you for being there for me when most needed! Lastly, Professor Maria for helping me find my passion through her urban politics course.

Las personas que más han influido en mi trayectoria universitaria han sido mis consejeras de vida de hermandad y fraternidad. Chloe, gracias por estar siempre ahí en lo bueno y en lo malo. No puedo imaginarme mi trayectoria universitaria sin tu apoyo y orientación constantes. Oscar, gracias por estar pendiente de mí siempre que tenías tiempo. Kelley, gracias por ser una gran motivación estos últimos meses. Jenny y Rosalie, gracias por estar ahí para mí cuando más lo necesitaba. Por último, a la profesora María por ayudarme a encontrar mi pasión durante su curso de política urbana.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

After graduating, I plan to take a gap year to relax and decompress from these past four years. During my gap year, I plan on taking a college advising job to help support high school students as they being their journey towards higher education. Also, I will be applying for law school admissions for Fall 2022 during this gap year. My long-term goal is to graduate law school and practice civil rights law to help ensure that those rights are protected and respected in society.

Después de graduarme, planeo tomarme un año libre para relajarme y descomprimir estos últimos cuatro años. Durante mi año libre, planeo trabajar como asesora universitaria para ayudar a los estudiantes de secundaria que están iniciando su camino hacia la educación superior. Además, durante este año sabático me presentaré a las admisiones de la Escuela de Derecho para el otoño de 2022. Mi objetivo a largo plazo es graduarme de la escuela de derecho y ejercer la ley de derechos civiles para ayudar a garantizar que esos derechos sean protegidos y respetados en la sociedad.
