• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?/¿Qué significa para ti ser un graduado universitario de primera generación?

Being first generation means that my parent's efforts weren't taken in vain. It means making my parents proud of accomplishing things they didn't have the opportunity to do. All the sacrifices my parents made for me allowed me to pursue a career in helping at youth risk and help them try and see their worth and show them that they are worthy and able to attend university. It means being able to help others and help others reach for the stars.

Ser primera generación significa que los esfuerzos de mis padres no fueron en vano. Significa hacer que mis padres se sientan orgullosos de lograr cosas que no tuvieron la oportunidad de hacer. Todos los sacrificios que mis padres hicieron por mí me permitieron seguir una carrera en ayudar a los jóvenes en riesgo y ayudarlos a tratar de ver su valor y demostrarles que son dignos y capaces de asistir a la universidad. Significa poder ayudar a otros y ayudar a otros a alcanzar las estrellas.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?/¿Cuál es su momento de mayor orgullo de su tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment is getting accepted into a UC school to begin with. When I was first applying to transfer to colleges, I was only going to apply to a college in my home town because I didn't think I was "smart" enough to get accepted into a UC. When I got my acceptance to two out of the 3 I applied to, I was in shock and that was when I realized I am smart and am worthy of anything I want in life. It taught me to never sell myself short and always at least try.

Para empezar, mi momento de mayor orgullo es ser aceptado en una escuela de la UC. Cuando solicité por primera vez la transferencia a una universidad, solo iba a postularme a una universidad en mi ciudad natal porque no pensé que fuera lo suficientemente "inteligente" para ser aceptada en una UC. Cuando obtuve mi aceptación a dos de los tres a los que postulé, me quedé en shock y fue entonces cuando me di cuenta de que soy inteligente y digno de todo lo que quiero en la vida. Me enseñó a nunca venderme corto y siempre al menos intentarlo.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/¿Qué consejo tienes para los estudiantes de primera generación actuales o futuros?

My advice is to never feel like you're not smart like others who's parents did attend college. Never feel unworthy of being where you are. Never be afraid of asking questions when you don't feel like you fully understand. Never be afraid to ask of seek help. Always speak out about your experience as a first generation student because it is different but shows that you worked harder than everyone else to be here. You belong here and you deserve to be here.

Mi consejo es que nunca sienta que no es tan inteligente como los demás cuyos padres sí asistieron a la universidad. Nunca te sientas indigno de estar donde estás. Nunca tenga miedo de hacer preguntas cuando sienta que no comprende completamente. Nunca tenga miedo de pedir ayuda. Siempre hable sobre su experiencia como estudiante de primera generación porque es diferente pero muestra que trabajó más duro que todos los demás para estar aquí. Perteneces aquí y mereces estar aquí.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son los familiares, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de su trayectoria universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que le gustaría compartir con ellos?

My boyfriend has been the biggest support system anyone could ask for. He allowed me to go to school full time and financially supported both of us. He gave me the opportunity to fully concentrate on my school work and was there to help me through the stress. He was emotionally supportive and was there to vent my problems and worries to. I would like to say thank you John for loving me and supporting me through this chapter in my life. Thank you for giving me the opportunity and allowing me to give my full attention on getting my degree.

Mi novio ha sido el mayor sistema de apoyo que alguien podría pedir. Me permitió ir a la escuela a tiempo completo y nos apoyó económicamente a los dos. Me dio la oportunidad de concentrarme por completo en mi trabajo escolar y estuvo allí para ayudarme a superar el estrés. Me apoyó emocionalmente y estuvo allí para desahogar mis problemas y preocupaciones. Me gustaría darte las gracias, John, por amarme y apoyarme a lo largo de este capítulo de mi vida. Gracias por darme la oportunidad y permitirme dedicar toda mi atención a la obtención de mi título.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son el personal, la facultad o los mentores que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de su trayectoria universitaria? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que le gustaría compartir con ellos?

Honestly all my professors these past two years have been amazing, supportive, understanding, catering, and caring. During the COVID quarantine, all the professors were aware that most of us were dealing with anxiety and mental health issues and were more than happy to assist us with any concerns we had and were willing to meet our needs.

Honestamente, todos mis profesores en los últimos dos años han sido increíbles y comprensivos. Durante la cuarentena de COVID, todos los profesores sabían que la mayoría de nosotros estábamos lidiando con ansiedad y problemas de salud mental y estaban más que felices de ayudarnos con cualquier inquietud que tuviéramos y estaban dispuestos a satisfacer nuestras necesidades.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planea o espera hacer después de graduarse?

My short term goal is to be able to find a job where I am able to help at youth risk and be the support they need in order to eventually have a bright and happy future. My long term goal is to purchase a home, get married, travel, have children eventually and hand down the wisdom I have acquired during my college career.

Mi objetivo a corto plazo es poder encontrar un trabajo en el que pueda ayudar a los jóvenes en situación de riesgo y ser el apoyo que necesitan para tener un futuro brillante y feliz. Mi objetivo a largo plazo es comprar una casa, casarme, viajar, eventualmente tener hijos y transmitir la sabiduría que he adquirido durante mi carrera universitaria.
