What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
Being a first-generation college graduate to me means making the people who have supported me all along and those who have made sacrifices for me proud.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
During my second quarter at the university when I was still struggling to adapt to the quarter system, I had a midterm for a challenging statistics class. To prepare, I spent a lot of time studying and I ended up receiving a grade I was really happy with.
What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?
To future first-gen students, I would say, "Don't be afraid to ask for help." As first-gen students, we may not know someone who has received undergraduate education in the U.S. so we have many questions and may be unfamiliar with many opportunities that are out there.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
The people who have been influential throughout my college journey have been my family and my friends here and at other universities.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Someone at this university who has been influential throughout my time here is my PI, Dr. Nitz from the Systems Neuroscience Lab. To Dr. Nitz, "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn more about neuroscience and research when I came to see you as a nervous, first-year transfer student last year!"
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
After graduation, I hope to take a gap year while I explore healthcare careers and gain experience before applying for my master's in the near future.
