What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
To me, graduating as a first-generation college student serves as proof of all of the self-advocacy that I've done the past five years, throughout undergrad and my Master's. I am proud to be a role model and trailblazer, not just for my direct family members but also for family friends and other first-gen students.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
Completing an entire thesis and thesis defense in just one year!
What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?
Make connections. One of the biggest struggles that many first generation students face is the fact that there are no parental figures who can connect them with resources and opportunities in college. Being first-gen means that no one is going to hold your hand and walk you through it, but if you at least make connections, the process will be a lot easier.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
My housemates the Chum Bucket, who have kept me sane through this entire quarantine and through my thesis writing.
My best friend Joy, who sends DoorDash deliveries and farms on Genshin with me every couple of days. She does so much for me and makes me feel so loved. I don't have words to describe how grateful I am towards her.
My partner and other half Ethan, who has supported me throughout my most difficult times, such as MCAT, med school apps, and my Master's. I love you.
My parents for being my greatest supporters and motivators. Seeing their hard work has kept my aspirations high throughout life and especially school. They are the reason why I have gotten as far as I have and why I will be going even further.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
The SSCP Pro Coach over at Revelle and my former supervisor Stephanie, for being one of the few mentors in my life and for hyping me up every step of the way!
The Thackray Lab for all of their support and help throughout the research process.
My PI Kina, for being one of my biggest mentors and advocates. Without her guidance and wisdom, my Master's would not have been possible.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
I'm coming back as a medical student in the fall to pursue my THIRD degree from UC San Diego!
