What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
I think being a first-generation college graduate means I get to represent a whole generation of students who did not have an example to follow when it came to going to college. First-gen students ARE the example for our families. Being a first-gen college graduate is being resilient, not just for myself, but for my family as well.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
My proudest moment from my time at UC San Diego is having the opportunity to work with my research group. We are in the midst of studying preventive interventions for children from birth to twelve years old.
What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?
Advice I would give current or future first-gen students is stop comparing yourself to others. Your story is going to be completely different and unique compared to others who do not share the same experiences as you do. Also, do not sell yourself short, regardless of rejections, obstacles, or accomplishments you are fully capable of reaching your goals. You just have to believe in yourself!
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
To my family and friends who have kept me motivated throughout my whole college experience, thank you! I am always grateful for your guys love and support whether I was stressed out during midterms/finals week or celebrating a new accomplishment. I love you guys!
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
To all my professors and mentors I have met at UCSD, thank you for all your knowledge and advice throughout my college experience.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
My plan after graduation is to get certified as an Emergency Medical Technician and Medical Assistant. I hope to work as an EMT or MA while continuing my research with children. After taking some time to work and explore the healthcare field, my dream is to get my PhD or attend medical school to become a doctor.
