• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?/¿Qué significa para usted ser un graduado universitario de primera generación?

First-generation college graduate means being the first in my family to go out to an unknown world. Facing obstacles that where once invisible but going through them and learning. Stepping out of my comfort zones and taking risks. Creating community from mentors and friends who will guide my path. Following the dreams of my parents, but mine as well. Opening and sharing my path for my little brother, who will not fall in the obstacles but to raise them and pass through them.

Ser un graduado universitario de primera generación significa ser el primero de mi familia en salir a un mundo desconocido. Es enfrentar obstáculos que alguna vez fueron invisibles y atravesándolos mientras aprendo. Salir de mi zona de confort mientras y correr riesgos. Creando comunidades de amistades y mentores que pueden guiar mi camino. Siguiendo los sueños de mis padres, al igual que los míos. Abriendo y compartiendo mi camino para mi hermano pequeño, para que el no caída en los obstáculos sino que los levantará y caminara directo entre ellos.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD? /¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment has been forming part of Alternative Breaks Education. From going out of my comfort zone and making a family, to teaching me about my passion for education, and ways in which I can become a changemaker in my community. I am also proud of becoming an agent of creating empowering change for women through founding an IGNITE chapter at UCSD with my friend and lobbying for women’s issues.

Mi momento de mayor orgullo ha sido formar parte de Alternative Breaks Education. De salir de mi zona de confort y formar una familia, de encontrar mi pasión por la educación y las formas en las que puedo crear cambios en mi comunidad. También estoy orgullosa de comenzar un grupo llamado IGNITE en UCSD con mis amigas y de poder participar en demandando a representantes políticos en crear derechos para el bienestar de las mujeres.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students? /¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

I would advise first-generation students to go out of their comfort zones. To focus on school but to go out there and make friends, join organizations, and go to school events. Apply for that opportunity that scares you. It will all be worth it at the end.

Si tuviera que darle un consejo a un estudiante que es el primero en su familia en graduarse de la universidad seria salir de su zona de confort. Enfocarse en la escuela, pero salir y conocer y hacer amigos, ya sea mediante organizaciones estudiantiles y/o yendo a eventos de la escuela. Aplicar a esa oportunidad que da tanto miedo. Porque al final todo lo vale.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

The most influential person in my college journey has been my mom. Her unconditional love and support for following my dreams and has given me all. For being so understanding of school pressures and just being there. For waiting for me at 9pm to get out of school and go home together sometimes. For giving me the most amazing Fridays after school. Lastly, for teaching me to be strong and hard-working.

Lastly, I want to show my gratitude for my brother and father. My little brother, for demonstrating that we have to run for our ambitions to become true and being able to dream big. For my father, who has taught me to work even harder.

Gracias, mamá, papá, y little Bro.

La persona más influyente durante mi proceso universitario ha sido mi mamá. Le agradezco por su amor incondicional, su apoyo para perseguir mis sueños, y por dármelo todo. Por ser tan comprensiva al momento de tener presiones escolares y por simplemente estar allí. Por esperarme a las 9 de la noche para salir de la escuela y poder volver juntas a casa. Por darme los viernes más increíbles y divertidos después de la escuela. Por último, por enseñarme a ser fuerte y trabajadora.

Finalmente, quiero agradecer a mi hermano y padre. A mi hermano pequeño, quien me demostró que tenemos que correr para alcanzar nuestras ambiciones y se vuelvan realidad. Gracias a él que me ha enseñado a soñar en grande. Para mi papá, que me ha enseñado a trabajar aún más duro.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

I want to thank Alternative Breaks advisor, Emily Liu. Thank you for being a mentor through out my college journey. For giving me so many opportunities, that without your push and recommendations I wouldn’t have applied to. Thank you for your kind and wise words. I am so thankful to have met you.

Quiero agradecer a la asesora de Alternative Breaks, Emily Liu. Gracias por ser mi mentor durante mi tiempo en la universidad. Por darme tantas oportunidades, que sin empujarme de mi zona de confort y sus recomendaciones no habría tenido estas oportunidades. Gracias por sus amables y sabias palabras. Estoy muy agradecida de haberla conocido.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Right after graduating I want to take some rest! But I would also like to get involve in creating transformative change to our education system.

¡Justo después de graduarme quiero descansar! Pero también quiero involucrarme en crear cambios transformativos al sistema educativo.
