What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
Being a first-generation college graduate is bittersweet. I wish my family members had the opportunity to graduate from a college had they wanted to. But at least my graduation is reflective of our stability today. It is an honor to hold this achievement.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
My first time getting above a 3.0 GPA in a quarter
What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?
You might feel like you don't fit in, and I don't know if we do. But that doesn't matter. We must demand our place in the higher education world.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I'd like to thank my uncle and aunts, Nana, More, and Chochis for always supporting and motivating me, my uncle Teto for providing mental breaks with his visits, my siblings, Callu and Jr. for always participating in my school projects when asked. I'll like to thank my grandma, Mami Coco, who always made me feel loved. Most importantly I'll like to thank my parents, Alex and Veronica, for pushing me since pre-School, for driving me from Tijuana to school here in San Diego, daily for a decade, and for working hard and smart to get us where we are at today. I'm thankful for being born into a big, happy family filled with innovators.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I'll like to thank my Student Success Coach, Stephanie Estrada, for supporting me and taking time to understand my learning process. I'll also like to thank AWP Associate Director, Holly Bauer, for taking the time to tutor me. Without her, I probably would've been kicked out from UCSD in freshman year.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
I hope in the future I can finance resources for low income public schools.
