What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
Being a first-generation college graduate means that all of my handwork and dedication finally paid off. It was all worth it in the end because I am now equipped with the degree I need for my career.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
Being accepted into the McNair Scholar's Program.
What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?
Find a study group with fellow classmates that share the same major as you, or at least share the same department as your major. You will have long, stressful nights of studying but if you find a small group of friends to share in this experience it is much easier!
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
My amazing wife helped me so much by supporting me throughout this journey. My entire family including my parents and siblings have always encouraged me to keep working hard. Lastly, my fellow math majors who were always there for me when I needed to vent or just help explain topics I was struggling in. Thank you everyone for your kindness.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Karen Van Ness, my CASP advisor, and Kelly Guerriero, my math advisor. Without their support and encouragement I would've been so overwhelmed at UCSD. Thank you so much for being patient with me. I am thankful to have met you both.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
This fall I will be completing SDSU's Master of Arts in Teaching Service (MATS) - Specialization in Mathematics for Community College Teaching.
