• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you? /¿Qué significa, para ti, ser una graduada universitaria de primera generación?

Being a first-generation college graduate means breaking down one barrier that has restricted both myself and my family for generations. It is the beginning of a better future for all of us.

Ser la primera universitaria en mi familia significa romper una barrera que ha restringido a mi familia por generaciones. Es el comienzo de un mejor futuro para todos.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?/¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment from my time at UC San Diego had to be getting my first 4.0 Spring 2020. As a freshman, I realized very quickly that there was a gap between myself and my peers. I didn't have access to the same resources and wasn't nearly as prepared. I worked all four years at UCSD trying to catch up and the moment I earned that 4.0, I felt like all of my hard work had contributed to that achievement. It might seem small to others, especially students who have a 4.0 GPA every quarter, but this meant a lot to me.

Mi momento de mayor orgullo durante mis estudios en UC San Diego fue cuando obtuve un puntaje de 4.0 en la primavera de 2020. Como estudiante de primer año, me di cuenta enseguida de la brecha que existía entre mis compañeros. Yo no contaba con los mismos recursos y por tanto no tenía la misma preparación. Trabajé cuatro años en UCSD para nivelarme y cuando obtuve ese 4.0, sentí que todo mi esfuerzo dio fruto. Para otros parecería poco, especialmente los que suelen obtener 4.0 cada trimestre, pero fue un gran logro para mi

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students? /¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

Build a community as early as you can! Support from others is what helps you through the unfamiliar situations that come with higher education. One of the biggest reasons I struggled in the beginning was because I felt isolated from everyone else and whenever I tried to reach out for help, it left me feeling embarrassed. Connections with the right group of friends, mentors, and educators can make the biggest difference!

Construye una comunidad tan pronto como puedas! El apoyo de otros es lo que te hace sobrellevar las situaciones desconocidas que llegan con la educación superior. Una de las razones por las que el comienzo me fue difícil, es porque me sentía aislada y cuando solicitaba ayuda me sentía avergonzada. Las conecciones con el grupo correcto de amigos, mentores, y profesores pueden hacer una gran diferencia!

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

My family and my boyfriend have always been one of my biggest motivators and supporters throughout college. There would be moments where I would be sobbing from stress but they were always there to comfort and encourage me to continue. I also found an amazing community of friends through my time at Revelle and at the student organization, AMSA. They were my roommates and study buddies. I never would have made it through some of my classes without them being there right beside me. I love you all so much and thank you for being such an influential part of my college journey!

Mi familia y mi novio han sido los que más me han dado aliento y apoyo durante durante la universidad. Había momentos en que me encontraba entre sollozos de todo el estrés, pero ellos siempre me motivaban y me animaban a continuar. También encontré una comunidad increíble en Revelle y en la organización estudiantil, AMSA. Fueron mis compañeros de cuarto y de estudio. No hubiera logrado algunas clases sin ellos a mi lado. Los quiero mucho y les agradezco por el rol clave que tuvieron en mi aventura universitaria!

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

When I first started classes at UCSD, I was deeply intimidated by professors and the amount of students who approached them. I wasn't sure if I would be able to find anyone who would be approachable and had time to speak with me. Luckily, I proved myself wrong and was surprised to find so many wonderful and passionate professors. Just to name a few, Dr. Chapman from the Department of Psychology, Dr. Hannah from Global Health Program, Dr. Klosterman from the Department of Chemistry, and Dr. Pirino from the Department of BIology. The interactions I've had with them have been nothing but helpful and insightful and I appreciate them greatly. I've also recently been working with my mentor, Rita, from the PUMA Initiative. Despite only working with her for a few months, she has been so inspiring and encouraging in my journey to applying to medical school. I have to include her in this as well since she has been so influential in this final chapter of my undergraduate education!

Cuando comencé mis clases en UCSD, me intimidaba acercarme a los profesores y la multitud de estudiantes que se les acercaba. No sabía si encontraría algún profesor al que me pudiera acercar y que tuviera tiempo para mí. Por suerte, encontré con sorpresa que había muchos profesores apasionados. Por solo nombrar algunos, Dr. Chapman de la facultad de Psicología, Dr. Hannah del programa de Salud Mundial, Dr. Klosterman de la facultad de Química, y Dr. Pirino de la facultad de Biología. Los encuentros que tuve con ellos fueron sumamente útiles, abrieron mi mente y los recuerdo con gran aprecio. También, recientemente he trabajado con mi mentora, Rita, de la iniciativa PUMA. Aunque solo trabajo con ella hace unos pocos meses, me ha inspirado y motivado a aplicar a la escuela de medicina. No puedo dejar de incluirla aquí, por su rol tan importante en este capítulo final de mi educación universitaria!

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

After graduation, I hope to start working some entry-level clinic jobs to gain some practical experience as I continue applying to medical school. In the far future, I hope to earn a medical degree and practice in lower-income and higher-need communities, mentor young students hoping to enter STEM, and collaborate with local non-profit organizations to bridge gaps that exist within systems of education, healthcare, and more.

Después de mi graduación, espero comenzar en algún trabajo de nivel básico en la clínica para obtener experiencia práctica mientras continuo aplicando a la escuela de medicina. En el futuro lejano, espero lograr mi título de medicina y ayudar comunidades de bajo ingreso económico y alta necesidad, espero servir de mentora para estudiantes jóvenes que aspiran incorporarse a STEM, y espero colaborar con organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro para tender puentes sobre brechas que existen en los sistemas de educación, salud y más.
