• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you? /¿Qué significa, para ti, ser una graduada universitaria de primera generación?

First Generation to me means being thankful for my parents sacrifices. I think about the difficulties I will face as a college grad and can’t even begin to understand how my parents have been able to give me and my brother the opportunities we have. It means acknowledging the past contributions of those in front of me who made it possible for me to study at Thurgood Marshall. It means that I now have a mission to continue knocking down barriers for other first generation students and uplifting them in their own journey. It also means recognizing the mental and physical hardships of navigating a whole college system with no one close to help alleviate the stress of what to do when something goes wrong. It means making mistakes and learning from them. But at the end of the day, it means persevering and knowing that all your sacrifices have value.

Para mí, Primera Generación significa estar agradecida por los sacrificios de mis padres. Pienso en las dificultades que enfrentaré como graduada universitaria y ni siquiera puedo empezar a imaginar cómo mis padres han sido capaces de darnos a mí y a mi hermano las oportunidades que tenemos. Significa reconocer las contribuciones pasadas de aquellos que previamente hicieron posible que yo estudiase en Thurgood Marshall. Significa que ahora tengo como misión continuar derribando barreras para otros estudiantes de primera generación y alentarlos durante su propio camino. También significa reconocer las dificultades mentales y físicas encontradas al moverme en un sistema universitario entero sin nadie cerca para ayudarme a aliviar el estrés de qué hacer cuando algo va mal. Significa cometer errores y aprender de ellos. Pero al final del día, significa perseverar y saber que todos tus sacrificios han valido la pena.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD? /¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

The day I after I almost gave up, the day I got back up and never looked back.

El día después en que casi me rindo, el día que me levanté y nunca miré atrás.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

I know it’s hard and it’s difficult to try and understand where and if you belong in this space. You do. You belong and you have so much to give and so much left to achieve. Even in the darkest moments know you have people who love and care about you and would understand. Keep your head up high, and never give into the voice in your head that says you can’t.

Sé que es duro y difícil tratar de entender dónde y si perteneces en este ambiente. Lo haces, perteneces aquí y tienes mucho que dar y mucho que lograr. Incluso en los momentos más oscuros, que sepas que tienes gente que te quiere, se preocupa por ti y te entenderá. Mantén la cabeza alta y nunca cedas a la voz en tu cabeza que te dice que no puedes.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

To my parents: You’ve watered the seed and let me blossom. Thank you. I love you both

To my little brother: You are my biggest inspiration. I thought God sent you into my life so I can guide you, but little did he know you’ve always guided me. Keep it up Emi. I love you so much.

To Ricky: You’ve kept me afloat at my darkest times and have always supported me. I couldn’t accomplish what I did without you. Te amo

To G3: You all are my second family. Thank you for making my time at UCSD feel like home. I will carry all of you in my heart for the rest of my life.

To Veena and Dr. Lefkowitz: You have both given me so much joy in our time working together as part of our research project. I am immensely thankful you took a risk on me and have helped me grow as a researcher. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart!

To my Friend and Family: Thank you for always supporting me, for guiding me and for loving me. One doesn’t forget those who have been walked with them through life.

A mis padres: vosotros regasteis la semilla y me dejasteis florecer. Gracias. Os quiero a ambos.

A mi hermano pequeño: tú eres mi mayor inspiración. Creía que Dios te envió a mi vida para que pudiese guiarte, pero poco podía imaginarse que has sido tú quien siempre me has guiado. Sigue así Emi. Te quiero mucho.

A Ricky: me has mantenido a flote en mis tiempos más oscuros y siempre me has apoyado. Sin ti, no podría haber conseguido lo que he logrado. Te amo.

A G3: sois mi segunda familia. Gracias por hacerme sentir como en casa durante mi tiempo en UCSD. Os llevaré a todos en mi corazón por el resto de mi vida.

A Veena y Dr. Lefkowitz: ambos me habéis dado muchas alegrías durante el tiempo que trabajamos juntos como parte de nuestro proyecto de investigación. Estoy inmensamente agradecida de que os arriesgarais conmigo y me habéis ayudado a crecer como investigadora. ¡Gracias a ambos desde el fondo de mi corazón!

A mis Amigos y Familia: gracias por apoyarme siempre, por guiarme y por quererme. No se olvida a aquellos que caminaron junto a ti en la vida.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

To Dr. Boyle: thank you for somehow making me fall in love with neuroscience. Your enthusiasm in and out of the classroom really suck with me and your Cogs 11 course was a truly defining moment in my college experience. I hope one day I’m able to teach Cogs 11 and do it justice!

To Dr. Alfonso: You were the first professor I had who was a Latina with her PhD in Neuroscience and that inspired me beyond words. You gave me a new sense of hope I can’t explain. Thank you.

A Dr. Boyle: gracias por hacerme enamorar de la neurociencia. Tu entusiasmo dentro y fuera de clase verdaderamente me marcó y tu curso Cogs 11 realmente definió mi experiencia en la universidad. ¡Espero ser capaz algún día de enseñar Cogs 11 y hacerle justicia!

A Dr. Alfonso: fuiste mi primer profesor Latina con un Doctorado en Neurociencias y esto me inspiró más allá de las palabras. Me diste un nuevo sentido de esperanza que no puedo explicar. Gracias.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

Short term I am excited to continue research in the health care sector and plan to apply to graduate school and become Dr. Camacho:) My long term goal is to make healthcare more equitable so people don’t have to choose between high medical costs and life threatening medical issues.

A corto plazo, estoy entusiasmada en continuar con la investigación en el sector de la salud y planeo postular a la escuela de posgrado para convertirme en Dr. Camacho :) Mi objetivo a largo plazo es hacer la atención médica más equitativa para que la gente no tenga que escoger entre elevados costes médicos y serios problemas de salud.
