• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you? /¿Qué significa, para ti, ser una graduada universitaria de primera generación?

First- Gen Student to means that I am example to the people in my community that it is possible to graduate from a 4 year University. I worked hard to get here, but I believe I am a product of all the sacrifices my mother did for me to be successful, the patience my brothers had with me and the love and support I received from all the people who helped me get here. It wasn't my journey alone and knowing that now, being a first -gen student most importantly is knowing that I can and will do a difference in my community to help others who are in the place I was when I was applying to colleges and struggling through my undergraduate education.

Ser un estudiante universitario de primera generación significa que soy un ejemplo para las personas de mi comunidad de que es posible graduarse de una Universidad con un programa de 4 años. Trabajé duro para llegar a donde estoy, pero también creo que soy un producto de todos los sacrificios que mi mamá hizo para que yo pudiera ser exitoso, de la paciencia de mis hermanos y del amor y apoyo que recibí de toda la gente que me ayudó a llegar hasta aquí. Este no fue solo mi camino y ahora sé que lo más importante de ser un estudiante universitario de primera generación es que puedo hacer y haré una diferencia en mi comunidad par ayudar a otros que están en el lugar que estuve cuando apliqué a distintas universidades y luché a lo largo de mi carrera universitaria.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD? /¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment was becoming a brother of Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. I have met such amazing Latino men who are just as dedicated to succeed as I am. They motivated me, inspired me and kept me going when I was struggling and at my lowest point in my life. They gave me a community and made me feel like I was back at home because they became my family. I am proud to be where I am now because they believed in me and made me feel loved and supported on this huge campus.

Mi momento de mayor orgullo fue incorporarme a la fraternidad Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity Incorporated (N/A). Conocí hombres latinos increíbles que estaban comprometidos con el éxito tanto como lo estoy yo. Ellos me motivaron, me inspiraron y me mantuvieron en el camino en los momentos más difíciles de mi vida. Me dieron un sentido de pertenencia a una comunidad y me hicieron sentir como en casa, porque se convirtieron en mi familia. Estoy orgulloso de estar donde estoy ahora porque ellos creyeron en mí y me hicieron sentir querido y aceptado en este campus gigantesco.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

Surround yourself with people who push you to be better and will love and respect you for who you are.

Rodéense de gente que los impulse a ser mejores y que los quieran y respeten por lo que son.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

The brotherS in my fraternity have been there for me when I didn't think anyone else would. I was surprised when I was at such a low point that they were willing to carry me on. When I felt like I had no one they gave me a place to live, feed me and gave me a place to sleep. When I needed motivation academically I would be inspired by them. They work hard to succeed and showed me that life isn't a solo mission but one where we work together to succeed. We have been through so much and I will do everything in my power to always show them how much love and respect I have for all of them. We have more journeys to go on and I will always be there for them when they need me because they have been there plenty of times for me. They are my family <3

Los hermanos de mi fraternidad me apoyaron cuando pensé que nadie me apoyaría. Me sorprendió cuando en un momento tan difícil de mi vida estuvieron dispuestos a ayudarme a salir adelante. Cuando sentí que estaba solo me dieron un lugar donde vivir, me alimentaron y me dieron un lugar para dormir. Cuando necesité motivación académica ellos me inspiraron. Trabajaron duro para ser exitosos y me mostraron que la vida no es una meta que se alcanza solo sino que todos tenemos que trabajar juntos para alcanzarla. Vivimos muchas cosas juntos y haré todo lo que esté en mi poder para mostrarles cuánto los quiero y los respeto. Aún nos quedan más caminos por recorrer y siempre estaré disponible para ellos cuando me necesiten porque ellos estuvieron disponibles para mi muchas veces. Son mi familia <3

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

I believe the pro-staff for 2-EXCEL have been the most influential in my college journey. They have seen me at such low points and always made me feel like I was worthy. They showed me to self love. They gave me the tools to succeed and always pushed me to love myself first. I wouldn't be where I am now without their support and their never ending kindness. I think Haydee, Michelle and Steph were the solid emotional foundation that kept me sane when I felt like my whole world was crashing, inspired me to seek resources that helped me in my personal journeys and overall showed me how important it was for me to love myself. I will always be grateful that they accepted me as a Mentor for their program. Thank you so much! <3

Creo que el personal pro-staff de 2-EXCEL ha sido el que mayor influencia ha tenido en mi experiencia universitaria. Me apoyaron en los momentos más difíciles y siempre me hicieron sentir valioso. Me enseñaron el amor propio. Me dieron las herramientas necesarias para alcanzar el éxito y siempre me impulsaron a quererme a mí mismo y ponerme en primer lugar. No estaría aquí sin su apoyo y su inagotable amabilidad. Creo que Haydee, Michelle y Steph fueron el apoyo emocional que me mantuvo cuerdo cuando sentí que mi mundo se derrumbaba, me inspiraron para buscar recursos que me ayudaron en mis trayectorias personales y en general me mostraron la importancia de quererme a mí mismo. Siempre estaré agradecido de que me hayan aceptado como mentor en su programa. ¡Muchísimas gracias! <3

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

I plan to apply and get into Veterinary School. I want to work in a clinic and specialize in small animal like dogs and cats. I want to be the type of veterinarian that teaches others and gives other minority undergrad students an opportunity to gain experience and light a fire in them to also go into medicine, whether it be animal or human.

Planeo aplicar y entrar a la Escuela Veterinaria. Quiero trabajar en una clínica y especializarme en animales pequeños como perros y gatos. Quiero ser el veterinario que enseñe a los demás y le de oportunidad de ganar experiencia a los estudiantes de minorías y alentarlos para que también entren a medicina, ya sea para animales o personas.
