• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you? / Que significa ser la primera en tu familia en graduacerse de la universidad?

Being a first generation college graduate means I have made my parents proud. All they have worked for and done for me has paid off. It means to me that my parents and I have had many struggles to get to where I am but it was all worth it. My parents have given me everything in order for me to be the very best that I can be. This accomplishment is not only for me but for them. They did everything they could to allow me to get into a great college and then a top university. I will forever be grateful to my parents for all their love, support and sacrifices they made for me to have made it this far. I am proud to be a first generation college graduate.

Ser un estudiante graduado de primera generación significa que he hecho sentir orgullosos a mis padres. Todo lo que ellos han trabajado y hecho por mi ha rendido frutos. Para mi significa que mis padres y yo hemos luchado para llegar al lugar en donde estoy, pero todo ha valido la pena. Mis padres me han dado todo para que yo sea la mejor versión de mi. Este logro no es solo para mi, es para ellos también. Ellos hicieron todo lo que pudieron para permitirme estudiar en un gran colegio y una de las mejores Universidades. Siempre estaré agradecida con mis padres por todo su amor, apoyo y sacrificios que ellos hicieron para que yo llegara hasta este momento. Estoy orgullosa de ser una estudiante graduada de primera generación.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD? / ¿Cuál es su momento de mayor orgullo en tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

I had transferred to UC San Diego during the pandemic, so I have never actually been to campus. However, my proudest moment from my time at UC San Diego was that I was working towards a program that I unfortunately did not get into but although I did not get accepted into that program I had not realized that within a year of just transferring to UC San Diego I had finished with my bachelors degree. I had focused so much on the program I wanted to be in that when I was not accepted I thought my bachelors degree was far from being completed but when I heard from the counselor that I was almost done I was beyond proud of how hard I had worked.

Hice mi transferencia a UC San Diego durante la pandemia, y por esta razón nunca estuve en el campus. Sin embargo, el momento del que estoy más orgullosa de mi tiempo en UC San Diego fue que estuve trabajando para un programa en el que no fui admitida, y a pesar de que no fui aceptada a ese programa no me di cuenta que en menos de un año de haber sido transferida a UC San Diego, ya había terminado mi Licenciatura. Me había enfocado tanto en el programa en el que quería estar que cuando no fui aceptada pensé que faltaba mucho tiempo para completar mi Licenciatura, pero cuando mi consejero compartió conmigo que estaba a punto de graduarme estaba más que orgullosa de lo mucho que había trabajado.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students? / ¿Qué consejo tienes para los estudiantes actuales o futuros de primera generación?

Advice I would give to current and future first-gen students is to not give up, always work hard and keep your dreams in mind. You will make it no matter how hard it gets or what sacrifices you will have to make, it will be worth it and you will accomplish all that you want. Whenever it seems like your dreams are too far away, don’t stop because it may be closer than you think. Even though a class may seem tough or you believe you have a setback in your path towards your goal, keep going because you are where you are meant to be in life and everything happens for a reason. Not everyone has a similar path, some may take 3 years to get an Associates and Bachelors Degree, others will take 8 years whichever your path is take it and do great.

El consejo que yo daría a actuales y futuros estudiantes de primera generación es no rendirse, siempre trabaja duro y ten siempre presente tus sueños. Lo vas a lograr, no importa cuan difícil sea o cuantos sacrificios vayas a hacer, valdrá la pena y lograrás todo lo que desees. Cada vez que parezca que tus sueños están lejos de lograr, no te detengas porque ellos pueden estar más cerca de lo que piensas. A pesar de que una clase parezca difícil o tu pienses que no estás avanzando en tu camino para lograr tu meta, sigue avanzando porque estás en ese lugar donde debes de estar y todo pasa por una razón. Todos tenemos caminos diferentes, a algunos les tomará tres años para obtener un Grado Asociado o una Licenciatura, a otros les tomará ocho años, cualquiera que sea tu camino acéptalo y hazlo muy bien.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them? / ¿Quiénes son los miembros de la familia, amigos o seres queridos que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de su viaje universitario? ¿Hay alguna palabra de gratitud que le gustaría compartir con ellos?

The people who have been the most influential throughout my college journey are my parents, my sister, and my husband. They have been the most influential people throughout my college journey because they have pushed me to keep going and never give up when things got tough. To my parents thank you for everything you have done for me, for all the sacrifices you have made, for the endless support and love you have given me. I am so proud to be your daughter. To my sister, thank you for always being by my side, helping me with my homework, for supporting me and loving me. Staying up late with me to complete homework assignments and reading my essays when I needed a second opinion on them. To my husband thank you for always pushing me to do my best, for picking me up when I was sad I failed an essay, exam or I didn’t do so great in a class, for staying up late with me while I did my homework, for all the support and love you give me. I love you all so much and without you guys I could not have done it.

Las personas que han influido más en mi paso por el colegio han sido mis padres, mi hermana y mi esposo. Ellos han sido las personas que más han influido durante mi paso por el colegio porque ellos me han motivado a continuar y nunca rendirme cuando las cosas no van bien. A mis padres, gracias por todo lo que han hecho por mi, por todos los sacrificios que han hecho, por el incondicional apoyo y amor que me han dado. Estoy orgullosa de ser su hija. A mi hermana, gracias por siempre estar a mi lado apoyándome con mi tarea, por ayudarme y amarme. Por quedarte despierta hasta tarde conmigo para completar tareas y leer mis ensayos cuando necesitaba una segunda opinión. A mi esposo, gracias por siempre motivarme a dar lo mejor de mi, por animarme cuando estaba triste porque no había hecho un buen ensayo, exámen o no me había ido muy bien en una clase, por estar despierto cuando hacía mis tareas, por todo el apoyo y el amor que me das. Los amo, no podria haberlo logrado sin ustedes.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them? / ¿Quiénes son el personal, la facultad o los mentores que han sido más influyentes a lo largo de su viaje universitario? ¿Hay alguna palabra de gratitud que le gustaría compartir con ellos?

The people at UC San Diego that have been the most influential throughout my college journey are Instructor Travis Chamberlain and Professor Amy Forest. To instructor Travis Chamberlain, thank you for always reminding us as students it is okay not to have everything planned out, it is okay to take it one day at a time. Thank you for always helping my group when we had questions on the assignments. Thank you for being a great instructor and actually caring about your students and their well-being. To Professor Amy Forrest, thank you for being so kind and always encouraging us to be great. Thank you for helping me become a better writer and for taking your time to go over my essay and helping me fix it as best as it could be. Thank you also for being an amazing professor and caring for the well-being of your students and their success.

Las personas en UC San Diego que han influido más en mi paso por el colegio han sido el instructor Travis Chamberlain y la Profesora Amy Forest. Instructor Travis Chamberlain, gracias por siempre recordarnos a tus estudiantes que está bien no tenerlo todo planeado, que está bien tomarlo un dia a la vez. Gracias por siempre ayudar a mi grupo cuando tuvimos preguntas sobre las tareas. Gracias por ser un gran instructor y en realidad preocuparte por tus estudiantes y su bienestar. A la Profesora Amy Forrest, gracias por ser tan amable y siempre motivarnos a ser mejores. Gracias por ayudarme a mejorar en mis habilidades de escritura y tomar el tiempo para revisar mi ensayo y ayudarme a mejorarlo lo más posible. Gracias también por ser una increible profesora y preocuparte por el bienestar y éxito de tus estudiantes.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating? / ¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte? (Objetivos a corto y/o largo plazo).

What I hope to do after graduating is get into the online MBA program at UC Davis. I also plan to look for a job or internship in my field of study. In the long-run I hope to own my own business, I hope to help and give back to my community as well as help other first generation college students to accomplish everything they want and make it to the finish line with the degrees they would like to accomplish.

Lo que espero hacer después de graduarme, es ingresar al programa de MBA en línea en UC Davis. También planeo buscar prácticas profesionales en mi campo de estudio. A largo plazo espero tener mi propio negocio y apoyar a mi comunidad y también ayudar a otros estudiantes de colegio de primera generación a lograr todo lo que ellos se propongan y que logren terminar los grados universitarios que a ellos les gustaría obtener.
