• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you? /¿Qué significa, para ti, ser una graduada universitaria de primera generación?

Being a first-generation graduate means opening new opportunities for myself and my siblings. It means embodying the American dream but also succeeding against all odds.

Ser graduada de primera generación significa alcanzar metas y crear nuevas oportunidades para mí y mis hermanos. Significa encarnar el sueño americano y también triunfar contra viento y marea.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD? /¿Cuál es tu momento de mayor orgullo durante tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment was recovering mentally and academically after struggling with severe anxiety and depression brought on by a rare family crisis.

Mi momento de mayor orgullo fue en mi recuperación mental y académicamente despues de aver luchado con ansiedad y depresión severas durante una crisis familiar.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/¿Qué consejo le darías a los estudiantes actuales de primera generación?

Even if you don't have a support system within your home or within your family, you don't have to do this alone. Don't be afraid to reach out both for your academic success and your mental health.

Aunque no tengas un sistema de apoyo en tu familia o en tu hogar, no tienes que hacerlo solo/a. No tengas miedo de pedir ayuda tanto para tu éxito académico como para tu salud mental. Todos necesitamos ayuda de vez en cuando.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (amigos, familia, comunidad, seres queridos)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

Thank you to my brother, Alfredo Jr. A.K.A. Squigg, and my sister, Cynthia, for seeing me as a role model even when I don't see it in myself. To my husband, James A.K.A Tuna, who doesn't understand the academic struggle but still tries to help where he can. To my sister, Jazmin, for surviving the worst day of all of our lives and still continuing to be the most optimistic, even-tempered person in our family. To the dozens of beautiful, confident, happy people I've had the honor of meeting, working with, or even just being internet-friends with. You inspire me more than you know.

Gracias a mi hermano, Alfredo Jr. alias Pamfi y mi hermana Cynthia por verme como un modelo a seguir incluso cuando no lo veo en mí mismo. A mi esposo, James alias Pelota, que no entiende la lucha académica pero aún trata de ayudar en lo que puede. A mi hermana, Jazmin, por sobrevivir al peor día de todas nuestras vidas y seguir siendo la persona más optimista y ecuánime de nuestra familia. A las docenas de personas hermosas, seguras y felices con las que he tenido el honor de conocer, trabajar o simplemente ser amigos por feis. Me inspiran y animan más de lo que creen.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/¿Quiénes son las personas de UC San Diego que han sido las más influyentes a lo largo de tu trayectoria universitaria (personal, profesores, mentores, etc.)? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

The SI program administrators, faculty advisors, and all of my professors at MiraCosta. Thank you for showing me the power of community.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/¿Qué planeas o esperas hacer después de graduarte?

I hope to encourage others to go to college, to learn math, to pursue the career of their dreams. My goal is to work in an academic setting either teaching or in administration.

Espero animar a otros a que vayan a la universidad, a que aprendan matemáticas y sigan la carrera de sus sueños. Mi objetivo es trabajar en un entorno académico ya sea en la enseñanza o en la administración.
