• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?/세대 대학 졸업생이라는 것은 어떤 의미인가요?

Being a first-generation college graduate means that my family and I were able to break the cycle of living a life with limited resources that affected my family lineage for generations. This also means that I am finally on the same playing field as my peers who had all the networking and financial resources due to their parents during their whole student career. Being a first-generation college graduate also means that I can dream big and pursue my passion with one less barrier in my career pathway. Lastly, being a first-generation college graduate means that I broke the stigma that surrounded me and other first-generation college students of being less intelligent and how we cannot go far with our background because I did it and graduated.

세대 대학 졸업생이라는 것은 저와 저의 가족이 대대로 한정된 자원으로 사는 삶의 주기를 깰 수 있었다는 것을 의미해요. 학생 시절에 인맥이랑 재원을 부모님 덕에 가진 다른 학생들과 공평하게 설 수 있었어요. 또한 1세대 대학 졸업생이라는 것은 저의 진로를 막는 장벽중에 하나를 없애고 큰 꿈을 꾸고 저의 열정을 추구할수 있다는 것을 의미해요. 마지막으로, 1세대 대학 졸업생이라는 것은 저를 비롯한 다른 1세대 대학 졸업생들이 덜 똑똑하고 배경 때문에 멀리 낳아 갈 수 없다는 오해를 깼다는 것이에요.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?/UCSD에서 가장 자랑스러운 순간은 언제인가요?

The proudest moment from my time at UC San Diego is when I took my failures and mistakes as a student and turned them into opportunities to grow and learn. Through those opportunities, I found my voice as an individual, as a student, as an advocate, and as an employee. I learned how to ask for help when I needed help. I accepted that it is okay to make mistakes and fall at times even though it will and does hurt at the moment. I learned to toughen up to seek advice from faculty and staff when I felt lost. All of these personal growths helped me paved my own narrative to navigate higher education at the end with the help of my support groups. I am happy with every step I had to take to get here, and I am excited for my blood, sweat, and tears that I put into my work in the past four years to be recognized.

UCSD에서 보낸 시간 중에 가장 자랑스러운 순간은 저의 학생 시절에 겪은 실패와 실수를 가지고 성장하고 배울 수 있는 기회로 만들었을 때에요. 이 기회를 통해 저는 개인, 학생, 응호자, 그리고 직원으로서 저의 목소리를 찾았어요. 도움이 필요할때는 도와 달라고 하는 방법을 배웠어요. 실수해도 괜찮고 아파도 넘어져도 된다는 것을 받아들였어요. 제가 길을 잃었을 때 교수진과 직원들에게 조언을 구할때의 강해지는 것을 배웠어요. 이 모든 성장은 제가 저의 서포트 그룹의 도움을 받아 끝에 고등 교육의 길을 찾는 저만의 이야기를 만드는 데 에 도왔어요. 여기까지 오기 위해 모든 발걸음이 행복하고 지난 4년 동안의 피, 땀, 눈물이 인정받아 기뻐요.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students?/ 현재와 미래의 1세대 대학생들에게 해줄 조언은 무엇인가요?

The best advice that I want to give the current first-generation students is to keep pushing forward no matter who or what prevents them from succeeding. Although it may feel like all the odds are against them and adversities are endless, they need to keep their composure and slay like a boss because they will make it in the end, which is extremely rewarding. I acknowledge that being a first-generation student is challenging due to the heavier baggage one needs to carry while navigating higher education with no guidance. Thus, there will be times where they will feel lost or not understood, which cause them to doubt their intelligence and my rightfulness to continue attending UC San Diego. But it is those same challenges that will make them a wiser and persistent individual who does not give up in life.

제가 현재의 1세대 대학생들에게 해주고 싶은 최고의 조언은 누가, 무엇이 성공을 방해해도 계속해서 앞으로 나가라는 것이에요. 모든게 불리하고 역경이 끝없이 펼쳐지는 것처럼 느껴질 수도 있지만, 끝에는 해낼 것이고 큰 보람이 있으니 침착하게 해 나가야 되요. 저는 1세대 대학생들이 지도 없이 고등 교육을 받는게 너무나 힘들고 무거운 짐이라는 것을 알아요. 그래서, 이 학생들이 상실감을 느끼거나 이해 받지 못한다는 것을 느낄 때가 있을 것이고, 자기의 지능과 UC샌디에고를 계속 다닐 수 있는 자격을 의심하는 시간이 있을 겁니다. 하지만 더 현명하고 끈기 있고 삶에서 포기하지 않는 사람을 만드는 것 또한 이 모든 힘든 시기에요.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?대학 생활 하면서 가장 영향력이 많았던 가족, 친구 또는 사랑하는 사람들이 누구인가요? 이분들한테 할 감사의 말이 있나요?

The people who have been most influential during my stay at UC San Diego would be my family because they were always by my side encouraging and empowering me that I can overcome all the adversities that I faced during my undergraduate career. So, I would love to appreciate my parents for teaching me what diligence and hard work look like. Without their love and support, I would not be where I am today. I also want to thank my beloved sister for being a great role model in my life and an awesome best friend. My family and their support meant so much to me and I could not have asked for more.

제가 UC 샌디에고에 있는 동안 가장 영향력 있는 사람들은 저의 가족이에요. 왜냐하면 항상 제 곁에서 제가 모든 역경을 극복할 수 있도록 저를 격려하고 힘을 주었기 때문이에요. 그래서 저는 부모님께 저한테 성실함과 노력이 무엇인지 가르쳐 주셔서 감사하다고 하고싶어요. 부모님의 사랑과 지지가 없었으면 현재의 제가 없었을 거에요. 또한 저의 인생에 훌륭한 롤모델이자 멋진 베스트 프렌드인 저의 사랑하는 언니에게 고맙다고 하고 싶어요. 저의 가족과 그들의 지지는 제게 너무나 큰 의미가 있고 저는 더 이상 바랄 수 없었을 거에요.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?/대학 생활 하면서 가장 영향력이 많았던 학교 직원, 교수진 또는 멘토는 누구인가요? 이분들한테 할 감사의 말이 있나요?

The people at UC San Diego that have been most influential throughout my college journey are my friends who brought laughter to my life during times of difficulties. I want to thank them for our beautiful and youthful memories of our undergraduate years together.

UC 샌디에고에서 저의 대학 생활의 가장 큰 영향을 준 사람은 저의 인생에 힘든 시기에 웃음을 준 친구들이에요. 이 친구들한테 저희의 아름다운 청춘의 추억에 고맙다고 하고싶어요.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?/졸업후에 계획이나 희망은 무엇인가요?

My post-grad plans are to take a gap year and go back to my home, NorCal. I do want to gain hands-on experience in a law field, potentially in law firms or county courts, before I apply to law schools and during my gap year. But most importantly, I want to apply to law school after the gap year.

졸업후의 계획은 갭이어를 갖고 저의 집인 북 캘리포니아로 도라가는 것입니다. 저는 로스쿨에 지원하기 전이랑 갭이어 동안 로펌이나 카운티 법원 같은 법률 분야에서 경험을 쌓고 싶습니다. 하지만 가장 중요한 것은, 갭이어 이후에 로스쿨에 지원하고 싶습니다.
