• What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you? / ¿Para ti qué significa ser una graduada de la universidad de primera generación?

Being a first-generation college graduate means that I am the first in my family to have the privilege to be able to have more job opportunities that my parents and family members weren’t able to get. I am not only fulfilling my goals, but also those that my parents and family weren’t able to have. In being a first-generation college graduate I hope I’m able to open more opportunities for those that come after me, as well as for myself.

Ser una graduada de la universidad de primera generación significa que soy la primera en mi familia en tener el privilegio de tener más oportunidades de trabajo que mis padres y mi familia no pudo tener. No solo estoy gratificando mis metas pero también las de mis padres y familia que no pudieron tener. En ser una graduada de primera generación yo espero poder crear más oportunidades para los que vienen después de mi y también para mí.

• What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD? / ¿Cuál fue el momento en el que sentiste más orgullo sobre tu tiempo en UC San Diego?

My proudest moment at UC San Diego was when I was able to receive all A’s for the first time for classes that I worked really hard in. I understand that grades aren’t the most important thing about the college experience, but I never thought I would receive all A’s in a quarter. However it happened, and it was very gratifying to experience.

Mi momento en UC San Diego donde me sentí más orgullosa de mí misma fue cuando recibí A’s en todas mis clases por primera vez, en las cuales trabajé mucho para obtener mis calificaciones. Yo entiendo que las calificaciones no son lo más importante de la experiencia universitaria pero nunca pensé que recibiría todas A’s en un trimestre pero finalmente ocurrió y fue una experiencia muy gratificante.

• What advice do you have for current or future first-generation students? / ¿Qué consejos tienes para los que son y los que serán estudiantes de primera generación?

Don’t pressure yourself too much. It’s ok to get lost along the way, you’re new in this experience and the fact that you’ve come this far is already worth admiring. If you get tired, make sure to make time and create the space you need to take mental and physical breaks. Always put your well being first above everything else.

No te presiones demasiado. Está bien perderse en el camino, eres nuevo/a en esta experiencia y el hecho que ya has llegado tan lejos vale admirar. Si tu te cansas, asegúrate que tomes tiempo para ti y crees un espacio para tus descansos mentales y físicos. Antes que todo, pon tu bienestar primero.

• Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them? / ¿Quienes son los miembros de familia, amigos o seres queridos quienes han sido los más influyentes en tu trayecto universitario? ¿Hay algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

I’m very thankful to both my parents for always being there for me and supporting me as best they can even when they didn’t fully understand how to best help. I’m also very thankful to the people in my life who have been supportive for me in ways I never imagined. These past four years have been amazing thanks to my friends, those from home and those I formed during my time at UCSD. To those who have supported me, laughed with me, and appreciated me, sincerely I thank you.

Estoy muy agradecida de mis padres por siempre estar apoyándome en la mejor manera que ellos pudieran aun cuando no entendían exactamente cómo era la mejor forma de apoyarme en ese momento. También estoy muy agradecida de la gente en mi vida que siempre me han apoyado en maneras que nunca me hubiera imaginado. Estos últimos cuatro años han sido asombrosos gracias a mis amistades, las de mi ciudad natal y las que formé durante mi tiempo en UCSD. Para los que me han apoyado, se han reído conmigo y me han apreciado, sinceramente les agradezco.

• Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them? / ¿Quienes son el personal, facultad o mentores quienes han sido los más influyentes durante tu trayecto universitario? Algunas palabras de agradecimiento que te gustaría compartir con ellos?

I am very thankful to my success coaches throughout my years, especially Toni Bussey-Neal for always giving me great advice and hearing me out when times were challenging. Thank you for giving me the most real and helpful advice, and for always looking out for me. I am also thankful to all my professors who have taken time to support me in my academics, especially those who have offered amazing opportunities that helped further shape my career and life goals.

Estoy muy agradecida a mi consejeros durante mis cuatro años, en especial a Toni Bussey-Neal por siempre darme buenos consejos y por escucharme durante los tiempos difíciles. Gracias por darme los consejos más honestos y útiles y por siempre mantenerte al tanto de mí. También estoy agradecida hacia todos mis profesores que me han dedicado tiempo para apoyarme en mi educación, especialmente los que me han ofrecido oportunidades maravillosas que me ayudaron a formar mi carrera y mis metas.

• What do you plan or hope to do after graduating? / ¿Qué planeas o te gustaría hacer después de graduarte? (Metas de corto plazo y/o largo plazo).

I want to enjoy as much quality time with my loved ones. Try new things and discover new interests. I hope to find as many job opportunities that interest me so I can find what makes me feel the most proud in my career and personal life.

Quiero disfrutar el tiempo de calidad lo más que pueda con mis seres queridos. Probar nuevas cosas y descubrir nuevos intereses. Yo tengo la esperanza de encontrar muchas oportunidades de trabajo que me interesen para poder encontrar qué es lo que me hace más orgullosa en mi carrera y en mi vida personal.
