Sgrafitto Clay Tile

The project that we did was a sgrafitto clay tile. The goal was to use a scratchboard surface to create whatever we wanted. The subject of my creation is a bunch of commonly known logos and symbols. The setting of my creation is a alternate universe. I chose to make this specifically because I love to recreate symbols and give my own twist on them. The steps I went through in creating this project were choosing a subject, scratching it, copying it onto clay and firing the clay . The materials used when I made this project were pencils, scratchboard, a scratch tool, clay and glaze. I chose to compose my art this way because I thought all the symbols jumbled together looked original.

Some techniques I use while making my art were cross-hatching, hatching and scratching. You can see it all over my work. At first my project was going to be just the symbols mixed together, but it evolved to create an image more original and provoking. A viewer would much rather look at symbols with zentangles on them then just symbols.

The meaning behind my artwork is showing that logos are actually a very important part of our lives, it is something that everybody can recognize . This project relates to me because I like recreating symbols and logos. . If I were to do this project again I would have not done such a complex diversity of symbols because they were hard to mimic onto the clay tile.
