Note Exit routes and Location of Fire Extinguishers
The majority of burglaries are caused by opportunists. Fortunately, intruders so far have been unable to gain access because we have been careful with our security measures.
If you are the first at the scene of a burglary at the clinic, take note of the following measures:
1. The very first thing you should do immediately after realising we have been robbed is to call the police.
In Case of Burglary:
Dial 000
If you suspect that a crime is in progress, or if you suspect, have just seen, or have just been involved in a crime, then phone the police on the emergency number 000.
Police Assistance 131 444
For non-emergency comments or enquiries, call the Police Assistance number 131 444.
2. Gather all the information you can. If you saw the person try to remember any information about them including
Sex
Age
Ethnicity
Clothing
Where they went
Also be aware of your surroundings.
How did they enter?
What did they take?
How did they leave?
Were they on foot or in a car?
Was there only one person? Several?
3. Take pictures. Both before and after a crime. Additionally, any evidence you can provide to the police and insurance companies can help you with your claims. Don’t disturb anything in order to take photos. Wait until the police arrive to move anything.
The only thing you should never try to take pictures of is your attacker. If you’re face-to-face with the person who is trying to steal from you, let them go. Sure, a photo might make it easier to identify them, but it’s not worth your life. Always cooperate with the thief. (See Section 8, Threats)
4. Call the insurance company [Insert Insurance Company Details}. It’s crucial to call the police first and the insurance company second, one right after the other. The claims officer will require the police report number.
5. Audit and repair the damaged building property and the security system. We want to ensure we are not hit again. The first step is to identify the point of entry and close the hole immediately. Window broken? Either get it replaced soon or board it up so no one can get in a second time. Check any other potential weaknesses. Check to ensure the front door, back door and windows are all locked and secured.
6. Let the neighbours know it has happened. Whether the robber will attempt to break in again or move on to theirs, the more eyes looking out for the perpetrator, the better.
7. Give Yourself Time to handle the emotions - and don’t be a hero
